이 글은 현대성에 대한 개념적 이해를 시도한다. 개념적 이해를 통해서 현대성의 ‘현재적’ 의미를 재구성하려 한다. 현대성 개념 내부의 급진성을 확인하고, 이것을 통해서 현대성 해석의 지평을 확대시킨다. 이 작업은 곧 현대성에 대한 보수적인 이해 방식과의 단절을 시도함을 의미한다. 이것을 위하여 개념의 역사화, 탈역사화, 재역사화의 과정을 추적한다. 현대성 개념의 역사화 과정은, 한국의 지적 전통에서의 ‘실학’ 개념의 역사화 과정과 유사하게 이해될 수 있다. 실학 개념을 둘러싼 논쟁에 대한 이해를 통해서, 현대성의 시대적, 지역적 의미의 탈고착화를 시도하여, 한국적 기획들의 이론적 지위를 확보한다.
This paper is an attempt for the conceptual understanding of modernity. By this effort, the meaning of modernity in the present would be critically reconstructed. First, the radical character of the concept of modernity is identified, and then, the interpretative horizon would be eventually enlarged in this way. This means at the same time to discontinue conservative understandings of modernity. For this purpose as a whole, is traced the processes of historicizing, dehistoricizing and rehistoricizing in the conceptual understanding of modernity. The historicizing process of the concept of modernity might be similar to that of ‘Silhak’ in Korean intellectual tradition. With the help of observing the debate on ‘Silhak’, the epochal, regional meanings of modernity would be de revitalized, that is pluralized, and any Korean project could possibly take a position in theory-building.
