이 연구는 김성국의 지역연구와 지역사회참여를 소개하는 동시에 지역사회학의 발전에 이론적으로 기여한 부분을 비판적으로 검토해보고자 한다. 이를 위해 김성국의 연구 및 실천적 성과를 개관하였고, 부족한 부분을 보강하기 위해서 김성국과 3회의 인터뷰를 실시하였다. 본 연구의 대상이 된 그의 주요 연구는 지역연구(지역주의, 지방 문화운동, 문화주의), 부산 연구(지역 문화론, 부산 정신)와 부산학, 동아시아 연구(동아시아주의와 동아시아공동체) 및 아나키스트 지역연구(최소공동체와 연방주의), 그리고 해양사회학의 전망이다. 그는 지역 발전을 위해서 문화주의적 접근을 강조하고, 세계화의 추세와 함께 지역적 관심을 동아시아(공동체)로 확대했으며, 미래의 해양 시대를 대비하고자 해양사회학의 전망과 과제를 제시하는 선구자적 역할을 수행하고 있다.
This study aims to introduce and review regional studies social participations achieved by Professor Seung Kuk Kim, focusing intensively on his theoretical contributions to Korean regional sociology. After over-viewing his major works, three times of interview with him was made to supplement necessary data. Main areas of this study include the following topics: his regional studies in general(regionalism, local culture movements, culturalism), Pusan studies(local cultures, Pusan spirit) and Pusanology, East asian studies(East Asian Community, East Asianism), and prospect for Ocean Sociology. Professor Kim employes a cultural approach to regional development and with the rise of globalization, extends his research area to East Asia, and finally, as a pioneer, considers the establishment of Ocean Sociology in preparation for the coming of ocean era in the 21st century.
