본 연구는 학점은행제에 참여하는 중년 여성 학습자들을 대상으로 학점은행제 참여 배경과 참여 과정, 학점은행제를 통한 성취 목표를 살펴보고 학점은행제 제도의 발전 방안에 대해 탐색하고자 시행되었다. 이에, 고등교육 학습기회의 소외 등으로 학업을 이어갈 수 없었던 여성들이 이제는 학점은행제의 중요한 교육 주체가 되고 있다는 것을 감안해 볼 때, 중년 여성 학습자들을 대상으로 학점은행제 참여 과정과 그 의미를 탐색하는 것은 타당하다. 따라서 본 연구는 1998년 3월 학점은행제가 실시될 때부터 평가인정을 통해 학습과정을 운영해온 서울시 소재 A대학 부설 평생교육원의 중년 여성 학습자들을 대상으로 학점은행제 참여과정과 그 의미를 질적 연구방법을 통해 탐구하였다. 연구결과 중년 여성 학습자들이 보이는 학점은행제 참여과정의 양상은 크게 ‘마음 속 꿈을 위하여’, ‘배움의 고통과 행복’, ‘수업에 따라 다르다’, ‘서로 다른 눈’, ‘진짜 미술 전공자 되기’로 나타났다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 학점은행제의 발전 방안으로는, 본 제도에 대한 인식이 단순히 학위 취득을 위한 것에 머무르지 않도록 그 시선을 바꾸는 일이 선행되어야 한다. 이를 위해 자아실현과 자기계발의 측면이 제외된 채 학점은행제는 곧 학위 취득이라는 시선을 극복할 수 있는 장치가 마련되어야 한다. 또한 졸업 취득 학점을 상향 조정하는 방안 등을 마련하여 학습자들이 충분히 수업 내용을 습득하고 전공자로 성장할 수 있도록 하는 제도가 마련되어야 한다.
The purpose of this study is to closely examine the middle aged women’s motivations to join Academic Credit Bank System and their participatory process of it, and to explore some improvement measures for the system. For that purpose, I have conducted a research including participant observation and in-depth interview with the learners for one semester at the institute of lifelong education affiliated with ‘A’ University in Seoul. I discovered some characteristics of the participatory process in Academic Credit Bank System while conducting the research. They are as followings; 1) ‘To make my old dream come true’, 2) ‘Pain and happiness of learning again’, 3) ‘One class various responses’, 4) ‘Two different perspectives between educators and learners’, 5) ‘To be an art major’. Based on this result, I have two suggestions here. The first one resulted in this study is that what should be done before anything is to redirect the public perception towards Academic Credit Bank System, which just sees the system as an easy way to acquire an academic degree. For this to change, there ought to be a device to overcome the mistaken perception of Academic Credit Bank System, that it is for obtaining a degree rather than gaining self-realization and self-cultivation. Moreover, we must construct a proper system, offering the right educational means and grounds to the learners such as a raise in the total number of credit units needed for graduation, so that they have an enough time to get educated through classes, and finally become successful experts in their fields.
