본 연구는 정신장애인의 주보호자 역할을 하는 중장년 형제자매의 경험의 본질을 파악하여 정신장애인의 중장년 형제자매의 보호경험에 대한 심층적 이해를 돕고자하는 목적 하에 수행되었다. 이를 위해 8명의 정신장애인 형제자매에 대한 개별면접을 통해 자료를 수집하고 그 내용을 Giorgi의 분석 방법을 통해 분석하였다. 중장년기 정신장애인 형제자매의 경험 본질을 살펴 본 결과 ‘생소한 정신과 질환을 접하게 됨’, ‘치료에 도움이 되고자 하나 해줄 게 없어 답답함’, ‘떨쳐 버릴 수 없는 세상의 높은 편견을 경험함’, ‘갈등과 가족 비밀이 있음’, ‘내가 홀로 지고 가야 할 “짐”이면서 두려움’, ‘함께 해주는 이들의 고마움’, ‘표현 할 수 없는 복잡한 마음속에 피붙이의 행복을 바람’의 요소들로 중장년기 정신장애인 형제자매의 경험이 구성되어 있음을 알 수 있었다. 이와 같은 연구는 정신장애인과 비슷한 성장발달단계를 거치는 정신장애인의 형제자매 경험 본질을 탐색한 연구라고 할 수 있으며, 이들의 다양한 경험을 이해하는데 의의가 있다.
The purpose of this study was to discover the essence of care taking experience of middle aged siblings of adult with mental disorder. By answering the study question ”what do siblings with psychiatric disabilities in middle aged experience ?”, phenomenological approach by Giorigi used for data analysis. The data were collected through in -depth interview with 8 siblings of adult with mental disorder. As a result of this study, 16 categories appeared from 7 themes as data analysis and major findings were as follows. 'Meeting strange mind and disease', 'wanting to help for treatment but being stuffy for no helping', 'experiencing dispellable prejudice in the world', 'having conflict and secret between family', 'burden and fear bearing alone', 'gratitude for the people along with us', 'hoping own brother' happiness in complicated heart'. These findings suggested that differences in siblings' mental health and shift the shaping the meaning that siblings give to caring of adult with mental disorder across time. The importance of supportive interventions in siblings and directions for future study also suggested.
