This Way of Ours: Buddhist Memorial Temples and the Search for Values during the late Koryŏ Dynasty

As radical changes began to take place in virtually all aspects of late-Koryŏ society, signs of change began to appear in Buddhism as well. Most notable, perhaps, was the heightened interest in establishing and restoring Buddhist memorial temples(wŏndang). What we also begin to see in this period is an attempt to replace these temples with Confucian ancestral halls(sadang). Although much has already been written on this subject, the present article challenges the widely accepted new scholar-official (sinhŭng sadaebu) thesis and, instead, situates these changes against the background of the radical transformation of the makeup of the late-Koryŏ elite. This, I argue, will allow us to see the attempt to displace memorial temples and the related attempts at fiscal reform that were made during this period as a problem of identity and values.

고려말 시대상황이 급변하면서 불교에도 큰 변화가 일기 시작했다. 특히 願堂의 건립 및 중수가 크게 눈에 띄게 된다. 願堂의 발전과 아울 러 願堂을 유교식 祠堂으로 대체하려는 조짐도 보이기 시작했다. 이 문 제를 어떻게 생각해야 할 것인가에 대해서는 한국 또 북미에서 이미 선 학들의 뛰어난 연구 성과가 여러 편 발표된 것이 잘 알려진 사실이지만 본고에서는 이 문제를 田制改革의 시각에서 다시 한 번 살펴보았다. 기 존의 연구와는 달리 원당이 사당으로 바뀌어가는 과정이 소위 新興士大夫의 등장과 함께한 새로운 이데올로기의 소산이라고 보기보다는 본고 에서는 田制制度의 붕괴 또 元황실과의 특수한 관계를 이용하여 성장한 權門世族하고 더 밀접한 관계가 있다는 것을 규명해보았다.
