본 연구는 근ㆍ현대 한국학계에서 행해진 일본불교에 대한 연구동향을 총괄적으로 살펴 본 것이다. 먼저 한 세기 동안의 일본불교에 대한 한국학계의 연구 성과는 걸음마에 불과하다는 것을 알 수 있다. 즉, 일본열도에 대한 불교전파자로서의 우월감은 있으나 일본불교사연구소와 같은 일본불교의 전문 연구기관을 제외한다면 일본불교에 대한 본격적인 학계의 조명은 거의 없다고 할 수 있다. 그럼에도 최근 일본불교에 대한 각 분야의 연구가 활성화되는 현상은 고무적이라고 할 수 있다. 이에 따라 연구 동향을 7가지로 나누어 살펴보았다. 첫째, 한일 불교교류사 연구로써 백제가 일본에 불교를 전파한 역사적 사실을 기점으로 고대를 중심으로 연구되고 있는 분야로 현재에도 지속적으로 이루어지고 있다. 둘째, 본격적인 일본불교연구라고 할 수 있는 일본 고대ㆍ중세ㆍ근세불교에 대한 연구 분야로 80년대부터 태동되었다. 셋째, 일본 근ㆍ현대불교의 연구로써 최근 역사학계의 근대사 연구에 의해 촉발되어 2000년대부터 왕성한 연구 활동을 보이고 있다. 넷째, 한일불교 비교 및 문헌연구로 전자와 같은 연구 선상에서 한자문화권이라는 역사적 배경 속에서 일본불교를 객관적 연구대상으로 하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 다섯째, 일본 불교문학연구로써 풍부한 일본불교의 고전문학텍스트를 중심으로 연구되고 있으며, 여섯째의 일본 불교미술 및 기타 문화연구와 더불어 불교에서 파생된 다양한 문화를 대상으로 하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 일곱째, 생사ㆍ장례 및 기타분야 연구는 소위 장례불교로 일컬어지는 일본불교의 특성에 대한 연구 분야와 함께 불교와 관련된 기타 분야의 연구 현황을 다루었다. 그리고 일본불교연구의 전망과 과제에서는 연구동향을 양적으로 나눈 일곱 분야의 연구에 대한 총체적인 평가를 다루었다. 일본불교 연구는 토착화된 지역불교에 대한 객관적인 연구 시야를 확보해야 함은 물론 상호 호혜적인 입장에 입각한 연구가 활성화 되어야 할 것으로 본다. 참고문헌은 본 논문에 인용된 논문과 저술의 전체 목록을 정리한 것이다.

This paper is a comprehensive study of the modern trend ofJapanese Buddhism research in the academic world of Korea. First ofall, we can see that the research result on the Japanese Buddhism inKorea for nearly a century are just the beginning. The JapaneseBuddhism did not receive attention from academia until a recent date,although many of the researchers feel superiority to the JapaneseBuddhism because Buddhism was spread to Japan from the KoreanPeninsula by Koreans in ancient era. Nevertheless, it is encouraging thatresearches in various fields of the Japanese Buddhism are proceedingbriskly. Thus, the trend of research in this paper is divided into 7 parts. The first, it is a field of study on the history of communicationin Buddhism between Korea and Japan. This field which continues tobe study recently, is researched on ancient Buddhism based on thehistorical fact that Buddhism was introduced into Japan from theBaekje Kingdom. The Second, the fields of study on the ancient,medieval, and modern Buddhism which had its beginning at the startof the 80`s, are the studies of Japanese Buddhism itself. The third, itis studies on the Buddhism in modern and present age. Many researchresults of this field sparked by studies on modern history in theacademic circles of history, are being achieved from the early 2000s. The fourth, it is the fields of comparative study and literature research. Researchers in this field view the Japanese Buddhism objectively. Thesefields are set in a cultural area of Chinese character like in Korea. Thefive, it is the study on Buddhist literature which is focused on classic works of literature in Japan. The six, it is the studies of Buddhist artand Buddhism culture. The seven, it is the studies on life and death,funeral, and other related fields in Japanese Buddhism which is calledFuneral Buddhism. Lastly, it is the forecast and task on the study of JapaneseBuddhism. This part is treated with holistic assessment of 7 parts inwhich was divided by the volume of research. We need to studyJapanese Buddhism from objective point of view. The study also shouldbe based on the principle of reciprocality between Japan and Korea. The bibliography of last part is a list of research papers and booksquoted in this paper.
