한반도 중부 내륙지역의 제4기 후기 환경변화를 밝히기 위하여 충남 천안시 운전리 지역의 유기질 점토층을 대상으로 화분분석과 탄소연대 측정을 실시하였다. 그 결과, 운전리 일대는 크게 UJ-I의 Quercus-Pinus림(만빙기 말~후빙기 전기)에서 UJ-II의 Quercus림(후빙기 중기)으로 변천하였고, UJ-I는 다시 UJ-Ia(만빙기 말)와UJ-Ib(후빙기 초기)로 세분되는 것을 알 수 있었다. 그리고 UJ-I는 아한대성 침엽수림 시대로부터 냉온대성 낙엽활엽수림 시대로의 이행기적 성격이 강한 침엽ㆍ낙엽활엽수 혼합림 시대, UJ-II는 냉온대성 낙엽활엽수림 시대에 대비되는 것도 알 수 있었다.
Pollen analyses and14C-dating were done on organic clay from Unjeon-ri, Cheonan, Chungnam in anattempt to bring to light the environmental changes during the Late Quaternary in the central part of the Koreanpeninsula. The result largely showed that the Unjeon-ri area underwent changes, from the Quercus-Pinusforest of theUJ- I Zone (the end of the Late Glacial~RI) to the Quercusforest of the UJ- II Zone (RII), and that the UJ- I Zone could besubdivided into UJ- Ia (the end of the Late Glacial) and UJ- Ib (RI). In addition, the study shows that the UJ- I Zoneresembles the mixed conifer and deciduous broad-leaved forest, which manifest strong transformational characteristicsfrom the coniferous forest of the sub-frigid zone to the defoliated broad-leaved forest of the cold temperate zones. TheUJ- II Zone, on the other hand, resembles the deciduous broad-leaved forest of the cold temperate zone.
