본 고에서는 우리나라에서 지금까지 발표된 백제도성에 관한 자연지리학 연구(이하 연구)들을 각각 시대순(왕도한성→웅진도성→사비도성→왕도익산)으로 그 연구방법과 연구성과 중심으로 분석하였다. 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 웅진도성과 사비도성의 경우, 상대적으로 축적된 자연지리학 연구가 많아 도성의 입지특성과 당시의 자연환경이 상당히 많이 복원되었지만, 아직 백제시대에 직접 대비되는 절대연대치가 부족한 관계로 당시의 자연환경이 완벽하게 복원되지 못했다. 그동안의 연구성과들 중에서 특히 주목되는 연구로는 지형분석 및 GIS분석을 이용하여 최초로 웅진도성의 촌락분포를 추정한 사례와 부여나성의 지형적 입지특성을 정량적으로 논의한 사례 등이 있다. 이에 비하여 왕도한성과 왕도익산의 경우, 관련 연구가 거의 전무하여 아직 많은 부분이 밝혀지지 않았으므로 이에 대한 사례연구를 늘려야 한다. 이를 위해서는 기존의 백제도성 연구에서 수행되었던 다양한 연구방법 중에서 이용 가능한 방법 뿐만 아니라 다른 시대(예: 신라, 고려)의 기존 도성연구 방법 중에서 유용하다고 판단되는 방법을 차용해야만 한다. 또한 자연지리학자들이 백제도성에 관한 다양한 연구주제 및 새로운 연구방법을 선택하여 관련 고고학 분야와의 학제간 융합연구를 행해야 한다.
This study analyzed the physical geographic studies on Baekje capital which were published till now in an order of times (Hanseong capital, Woongjin capital, Sabi capital, and Iksan capital) with an emphasis on the methods and results of the studies. The outcome is as the following: There were relatively many physical geographic studies on Woongjin capital and Sabi capital in comparison with others, so the locational characteristics and natural environments of those capitals were restored a lot, but there was lack in the information about the absolute age which was a direct comparison with the Baekje Period so that the natural environments of the times were not restored perfectly. Notable study results of those studies were the assumption of the distribution of the villages of Woongjin capital which was made first of its kinds by using topographic analysis and GIS analysis and the quantitative discussion of the topographic location characteristics. However, there were almost no studies on Hanseong capital and Iksan capital, so information about the capital was scarcely revealed. Therefore more studies on it should be made. To that end, methods available from the previous various study methods made on the Baekje capital and also from the previous study methods made on other periods of kingdoms such as Shilla and Koryeo kingdoms should be used. In addition, various study subjects and new study methods should be used in discussion and study of Baekje capital in fusion with archaeologists.
