The purpose of this research is to study the academic ethics of Korean college students. For this purpose, a survey was made for 1,200 students of a 4-year university located in Gyeonggi Province, Korea. The analysis of the survey research shows a seriously scant regard for ethics of the college students. Numerous cases of ethical violation were reported; most students have plagiarized another person’s postings from the Internet, which turned out to be the most common misdeeds in the campus. And the level of transgression corresponded with the student’s evaluation of each deed, – in case of a deed they usually consider highly immoral, they showed the tendency of less violation of it; when they have more permissive standard toward a deed, they violated it more often. These ethical transgression and violation of college students can be explained by individual factor and contextual factor. To see which explains the students’ethical sense better, I compared the individual factor with the response to the peer behaviors, which was pointed out as the most significant contextual factor in many precedent studies on this subject. The result proved that the contextual factor has stronger influence on the transgressions and violations. To boost academic integrity in the universities, the students need to improve their ethical awareness, and an institutional environment to bring about and spearhead the positive change in students needs to be set up at the same time. Most of the universities in Koreaare still lack of such institutional framework to establish the academic ethics; however, further changes are expected in the future as the need for such system is widely shared.
