이 논문은 전통적 신화 속의 영웅이 현대의 문화콘텐츠에서 어떻게 새롭게 서사되고 있는지와 영웅신화의 새로운 서사에 담긴 의미가 무엇인지에 대해 분석심리학적입장에서 살펴볼 것이다. 분석심리학에서는 영웅이 인간의 집단무의식에 깃든 원형적이미지의 일종이라고 본다. 그리고 분석심리학은 영웅신화 속의 영웅이란 우리의 정신이 무의식 상태에서 의식성을 획득해 가는 과정을 형상화한 것이라고 파악한다. ‘분리-입문-회귀’라는 영웅신화 모험담의 표준 궤도를 잘 견지하고, 압도적 장애를 헤쳐나가는 가운데 자기 초극에 도달하는 주인공을 가진 월트 디즈니의 ‘헤라클레스’와 브렛 래트너 감독의 ‘허큘리스’는 분석심리학이 중시하는 영웅신화의 고전적 가치를 잘계승하고 있다. 그러면서도 두 작품에서는 현대적 시대정신의 산물이라고 볼 수 있는 공통된 개작의 특징이 발견된다. 첫째, 영웅이 운명의 구속과 책무로부터 꽤 자유로운 정신적 주체가 되었다. 둘째, 영웅을 돕는 조력자 비중이 크게 늘었고, 단독적 영웅보다는 팀을이루는 협동적 영웅이 부각된다. 셋째, 영웅의 실존적 인간성의 회복이 강조된다. 넷째, 현세중심성이 두드러진다. 따라서 영웅상이 인간의 의식성의 획득과 발전의 과정을 함축한 우리의 원형적 이미지라는 설명을 받아들일 경우, 우리가 폭넓게 공유하는콘텐츠적 영웅상의 이와 같은 특징을 통해 현대의 일정하게 새로운 의식성의 탄생을감지할 수 있고, 시대정신이 지향하는 주체의 성격이 무엇인지도 간접적으로 확인할수가 있다.
This study set out to investigate how heroes of traditional myths were narrated anew in modern cultural contents and what meanings were contained in the new narratives of heroic myths from the perspective of analytic psychology. Analytic psychologists see heroes as a type of archetypal images in the collective unconscious of human beings. They also understand that heroes in heroic myths are the embodiment of the process of human mentality becoming conscious in the state of unconsciousness. Both Heracles by Walt Disney and Hercules by Director Brett Ratner fully inherit the classical values of heroic mythology valued in analytic psychology as their respective protagonists are good at following the standard track of adventure tales in heroic myths represented by “separation-initiation-return” and go through overwhelming obstacles, thus reaching self-transcendence. The two works show, at the same time, common adaptation characteristics that are called the products of modern spirit of the times: first, the heroes are spiritual subjects highly free from the bondage and obligation of destiny; second, the importance of helpers of heroes skyrockets, and collaborating heroes in a team are highlighted more than individual ones. Third, there is an emphasis on the recovery of heroes' existential humanity. Finally, this world-centeredness is prominent. If it is accepted that hero figures are the archetypal images of human beings with the acquisition and development process of human consciousness implied in them, one will be able to detect the birth of new certain consciousness of modern times and indirectly check the nature of subjects to whom the spirit of the times is oriented through those characteristics of content-style hero figures widely shared by modern people.
