본 논문은 하이데거의 과학 개념과 현대 기술에 대한 해석을 살펴봄으로써 그의 과학 비판이 가지고 있는 특징을 해명하고자 한다. 하이데거의 가장 중요한철학적 관심사들 중 하나는 과학과 기술에 대한 비판이다. 다시 말해, 하이데거의철학적 관심은 현대 과학의 의미를 이해하고, 그것이 서양 형이상학에 대해 가지는 관계를 파악하는 데에 초점을 맞추고 있다. 하이데거에 의하면, 현대 과학의근원은 서양 형이상학의 근원으로부터 이해되어야 한다. 존재 자체가 아닌 존재자에만 관심을 두는 기술은 전통 형이상학의 논리적 귀결이다. 그렇다면 현대 기술의 본질은 무엇인가? 오늘날 기술의 본질에 대한 물음이 두 가지 명제로 답변가능하다는 사실은 누구나 알고 있는 사실이다. 첫째, 기술은 목적을 위한 수단이다. 둘째, 기술은 인간의 행위이다. 그러나 기술에 대한 이러한 도구적, 인간학적정의를 하이데거는 거부한다. 하이데거가 보기에 이러한 정의들은 과거의 수공 기술과 기계 기술에 대해서는 타당하다. 하지만 이러한 도구적 정의는 기술의 본질이 ‘몰아-세움’임을 드러내지 못한다. 하이데거에게 무엇보다 중요한 것은 이러한기술의 본질과 우리가 어떻게 ‘자유로운 관계’를 맺을 수 있는지를 설명하는 것이다. 우리는 과학과 기술을 우리의 일상적 삶 속에 받아들여서 의미 있게 사용하면서도 그것의 지배를 받거나 노예가 되지 않을 수 있다. 기술에 대한 이러한 자세를 일컬어 하이데거는 ‘사물에 대한 초연함’과 ‘비밀을 향한 개방성’이라고 한다.

In this paper I want to clarify the character of Heidegger’s critique of science by examining the relation between his conception of science and his interpretation of modern technology. One of the most important philosophical concerns in the work of Martin Heidegger is the critique of science and technology. In other words, Heidegger’s philosophical interest focused on an effort to understand the meaning of modern science and to comprehend its relationship to western metaphysics. Therefore the origin of modern science must be understood from the origin of western metaphysics. In his view, technology is the logical outcome of traditional metaphysics, which concerns itself with beings and not with Being itself. Then, what is the essence of modern technology? Everyone today knows that the question concerning the essence of technology can be answered by two simple statements: 1) technology is a means to an end, and 2) it is a human activity. But Heidegger refused such as instrumental and anthropological definitions of technology. In Heidegger’s view, these definitions are correct both for the earlier handwork technology and for machine technology. Yet the instrumental definition does not uncover technology in its essence, namely ‘com-positing’. It is very important for Heidegger explaining how man must try to find a ‘free relation’ to the essence of technology. We can let science and technology enter our daily life, and at the same time meaningfully use them without allowing them to dominate and enslave us. Heidegger calls this comportment toward technology ‘releasement toward things’ and ‘the openness to the mystery’.
