이 논문은 이청준의 첫 장편소설 『조율사』의 의미와 특징을 고찰하는 데 목적을 둔다. 이를 위해 본고는 『조율사』를 중심에 놓고 「전쟁과 악기」, 「목포행」을 겹쳐 읽으며 『조율사』의 생략된 부분을 짐작해 보는 방법을 택하였다. 이청준 소설에는 말하고자 하는 ‘발화욕망’과 의미를 숨기고자 하는 ‘은폐욕망’이 동시에 작용하는 경우가 많다. 은폐욕망은 의도적, 비의도적 생략을 발생시키게 되며, 이청준 소설을 읽은 독자는 소설에서 무엇인가가 덜 해명된 듯한 느낌을 받게 된다. 본고는 세 소설에 유사한 모티프가 반복․변주되는 점에 주목하여, 『조율사』의 생략된 지점을 추측하여 보았다. 『조율사』와 「전쟁과 악기」에는 ‘조율 모티프’, 『조율사』와 「목포행」에는 외종형 이야기가 유사한 방식으로 등장한다. 세 소설을 겹쳐 읽음으로써 『조율사』에서 사회정치 현실에 대한 비판적 인식이 간접화되어 있음을 확인할 수 있었다.
The purpose of this study was to shed light on the speech method of 조율사, the first novel of Lee Cheong-jun, through reading by overlapping. It is an often case in Lee's novels that "speech desire" to speak out works simultaneously with "concealment desire" to cover up the real intention. Concealment desire leads to intentional or unintentional omissions, which is why readers feel like there is something left that requires further explanations in his novels. The present study read three of his novels, 조율사, 전쟁과 악기, and 목포행, through reading by overlapping, figuring out omissions in Tuners and clarifying their meanings.
