This paper will analyze the issues of Korean journalism which has become strengthened following the democratization and the challenge of civil journalism to overcome those issues. In particular, a focus will be made on practice modes and political influence of civil journalism which has come into existence as a vessel of counteraction against established journalism. Here, Ohmynews will be exemplifies as a quintessential Internet newspaper which has innovated traditional journalism based on the Internet and citizens. Also, the social background and system in which online media could gain success will be clarified based on the case of Korea.

2000년대에 한국의 온라인 미디어는 보수적인 기성 언론에 도전하며 강력한 대안미디어로 등장해왔다. 온라인 미디어의 확산은 민주화에 따른 시민사회의 성장과 1990년대 중반부터 시작된 급속한 정보화에 힘입은 결과이다. 주지하 듯이 인터넷은 메시지 생산자와 수용자간의 경계 붕괴, 쌍방향적 소통, 게이트 키핑의 해체 등 커뮤니케이션 방식의 주목할 만한 변화를 촉진해왔다. 한국의 온라인 미디어는 이같은 인터넷의 이점을 활용하여 시민들과의 상호작용을 극 대화하며 기성언론에 맞선 대항적 공론장을 창출할 수 있었다. 이러한 맥락에 서 이 글에서는 민주화 이후 권력화된 한국 언론의 문제점과 이를 극복하기 위 한 시민저널리즘의 도전에 대하여 분석한다. 특히 기성언론에 대한 대항기제로 등장한 시민저널리즘의 실천 양식과 정치적 영향력에 초점을 맞춘다. 여기에서 오마이뉴스는 인터넷과 시민을 기반으로 전통적 저널리즘을 혁신해온 대표적인 인터넷신문의 사례로 다루어진다. 그리고 한국의 경험을 바탕으로 온라인 미디 어가 성공을 거둘 수 있었던 사회적 배경과 맥락에 대하여 해명한다.
