2002년 6월 미군 장갑치에 의한 신효순 · 심미선 사망사건과 미군병사 무죄평결은 대규모반미춧불시위를 초래하였다 그토록 반미감정이 확산된 원인은 무엇일까， 첫째. 국내정치적요인이 크게 작용했다 김대중(金大中) 정부는 반미춧불시위를 차단하기 위한 노력을 거의기울이지 않았다 반미감정의 확산은 집권여당의 대통령선거 승리에 이롭다고 보았기 때문이다 집권여당 대통령후보였던 노무현(盧武鉉)씨는 아예 반미를 선거 전략으로 활용했다. 둘째， 한미(韓美) 법문화의 치이가 컸다. 미국은 신효순 • 심미선 사건과 관련하여 형사책임을 제외하고는 민사책임을 비롯한 전반적 책임을 받아들였다. 그러나 사망 교통사고가발생하면 가해자가 당연히 구속되는 것으로 생각하는 한국인들은 미군병사 무죄평결을 이해할수없었다. 셋째，한국인의 고양된 정체성을 들 수 있다. 한국인의 국민정체성은 민주화와 경제성장. 올림픽과 월드컵 개최， 그에 따른 대한민국의 국제적 지위 향상과 더불어 크게 고양되었다. 그렇게 고양된 한국인의 정체성이 미군병사 무죄평결이라는 외부요인에 의해 위협받으면서대중운동으로 분출되었다넷째， 아프간전쟁에 이어 이라크전쟁이 임박한 가운데 젊은 세대의 반전평화(反戰쭈和)정서가 반미감정과 결합하여 상승작용을 불러일으켰다2002년 반미춧불시위는 외견상 비폭력 평화시위였으며， 시위대의 구호도 ‘주한미군 철수까지 나아가지 않고 ‘한미(韓美) 주둔군지위협정 (SOFA) 개정. 수준에 머물렀다는 점에서‘온건한 반미’ , 혹은 ‘합리적 반미’ 로 평가받기도 했다 그러나 그것은 그 이면에 존재했던중요한 문제점들을 간과한 것이다. 첫째 ， 사실이 아닌 허위 선전이 난무했다. 둘째， 객관적인 사실보다 과장하여 미국을 비판히는 일이 많았다 셋째 ， 극단적인 사례만을 부각시켜 대중의 감정을 자극하는 경우가 적지 않았다. 그뿐 아니라 반미춧불시 위의 주도세력은 반미이념으로 무장된 반미주의자들이었다. 이들은 곧이어 이라크파병 반대투쟁 ， 평택미군기지확징이전 저지투쟁 ， 한미 자유무역협정 (FTA) 체결반대투쟁을 계속했다. 같은 단체‘ 같은사람들이 총체적 반미투쟁을 전개하는 것이다

The deaths of Shin Hyo-soon and Shim Mi-sun 2002 in Korea resulted in a large-scale anti-American demonstration. What are its main factors? First,domestic politics in Korea was the most important factor. The jury brought in the verdict of not guilty in November 2002, when the Korean presidential election campaigns were in full bloom. Kim Dae-joong administration thought the rise of anti-Americanism was helpful for the ruling party to win the election,making no effort to settle the demonstration. Furthermore, Roh Moo-hyun, the successor of Kim Dae-joong, pledged himself to anti-American platforms. Because of the difference in the culture of law between Korea and America,Korean people couldn’t understand the verdict of not guilty, even though the U.S. actually has accepted complete responsibility, including civil accountability, not criminal responsibility, for this accident. In Korea, a man who drives a car to kill other person must be arrested and imposed on the criminal accountability. And the death of two schoolgirls and the verdict of not guilty threatened the Korean national identity, which was prompted into the vigillight demonstration. The anti-war/pro-peace sentiment of Korean people also had an influence on the demonstration.
