The modern times was a great transition period for Korea. Domestically, it was a trans ition process from a feudal society based on a caste system to a civil society pointing to the principle of equality, whereas, internationally, it was a period of establishing national consciousness. To state it more concretely, it was a political transition from monarchy to democracy, an economic transition from feudalism to capitalism, a sociological transition fr om a hierarchical society to a society of equality, and an ideological transition from the tr aditional to the anti-traditional. The most notable trait of this transitional process was the fact that the ordinary people emerged as a central force in the society.
