Almost all Bible which we use today followed the lead of translation after the Reformation in rendering the occupation of Jesus as carpenter. Unlike this translation, however, most New Testament scholars do not consider the occupation of Jesus to carpenter. Rather, they understand the occupation of Jesus to craftsman who works with stone or other materials like metal in addition to wood, especially a builder. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to consider this understand of the occupation of Jesus by several convincible bases with literary evidence. That is, it is the purpose of this paper to consider the occupation of Jesus, by investigating the meaning of the term τέκτων to be employed in the literature which were produced in the Jesus times, the geographical and historical situation of Nazareth that Jesus lived, and the vocabularies and contents in the sermons of Jesus. This work is necessary because the clearer comprehension of Jesus' occupation is helpful to the better understanding of Jesus' acts and messages in the Gospels. That is, the occupation of Jesus is closely related with the life of Jesus. The languages and dialects that Jesus used in his trade, and his experience of social situation and circumstance of life of contemporary people would affect to his conceptual world, attitudes toward wealth and poverty, political views, and religious faith. And all of them determined direction of Jesus' act and message. In this point, this work is necessary. Because the investigation of occupation of Jesus provides new understanding about the historical fact related to Jesus, thereby makes to be able to understand his acts and messages in the Gospels in other viewpoint, this research is meaningful. Moreover, this study of the occupation of Jesus presents new assignments related to this problem.
