This article explores Luke’s narrative construction of Peter, which is peculiar among the Gospels, in the plot structure. Luke omits and/or mitigates the negative descriptions of Peter, which are found in the other three Gospels, and presents the character as the outstanding disciple of Jesus, who conveys the two important themes of Luke-Acts: the discipleship of the Cross and the initiative of the Holy Spirit. The two motifs are the two ways the discipleship unfolds in Luke-Acts. Just as Jesus bears the Cross, the disciples should take up their own Cross to follow their master. The other side of the discipleship is to realize the initiative of God in their lives and ministries. The two ways combine the two story-lines of Luke-Acts, i.e., “the story of Jesus” and “the story of the disciples.” Robert Tannehill considers the interaction between “Jesus and the disciples” as one of many narrative strands forming the rope of Luke-Acts. He is right in that the disciples are one of the sub-characters, who do not act independently but as a counterpoint of Jesus. However, the disciples are on the level above the other characters, because they frequently act in the place of Jesus and “in the name of Jesus,” mostly in Acts but also in the Gospel. Thus, the story of the disciples is the other side of the story of Jesus in Luke-Acts. This study demonstrates how the two themes and the two stories, which are fully blossomed in Acts, burgeon in the Gospel.
