The research of the parables of Jesus depends upon the understanding of the experience, values, and worldview of a person in the ancient Mediterranean world. This article proposes to examine Luke 16:1-8b from a sociological perspective. Traditionally, the rich man in the parable was viewed as a symbol of God, and the steward as an evil servant who repented. This study challenges the traditional view and shows that the rich man may have been an exploitive Landlord whilst the steward quite a sympathetic figure in the eyes of an ancient Mediterranean person.
