In Matthew 15:21-28 Jesus is portrayed to have initially dismissed a request of a Canaanite woman (vv. 24 and 26) and ultimately obliged her with healing her daughter (v. 28). This episode could influence upon or reflect the divergence and shift in attitude toward the Gentile mission in the Jewish Christian community of the Gospel of Matthew. This shift also marks the revision of missiology in Matthew’s community. Despite his later accommodation to her petition, Jesus’ initial refusal to the woman is so harsh and prominent that many exegetes have been led to believe in the restricted boundary of the earthly Jesus’ ministry (15:24, 26 cf. 10:5-6). I find it difficult to dismiss the conclusion of the story, however. It is more probable than not that Jesus’ harsh words of 15:25 would have resonated with the conservative Jewish members in the community who adhered to the exclusive scope of mission as attested in 10:5-6. Matthew’s portrayal of Jesus as the role model for Christians to emulate particularly in the mission discourse (10:5-42) should affect the way in which the Matthean community interpreted Matthew 15:21-28. With respect to the missional orientation of the Matthew’s community, Matthew 15:21-28 is a rhetorical tour de force to persuade its conservative Jewish audience to embrace and join in the Gentile mission.
마태복음에서 열방 선교명령(28:19-20)으로 대표되는 보편주의 (universalism)와 배타적인 이스라엘 선교명령(10:5-6)로 대표되는 유대특수주의(particularism)의 관계는 많은 성서학자들의 관심을 받아왔다. 편집비평적 관점은 마태복음이 마태공동체의 사회적정황을 반영한다고 전제한다(the community-based approach). 이런 관점에서 본다면, 마태의 유대공동체 안에는 이방선교에 대해 진보적인 입장을 취하는 유대기독교인들이 있었을 것이고, 다른 한편으로는 이를 반대하는 유대기독교인들이 있었을 것이다. 이러한 긴장 가운데 있는 마태공동체에게, 가나안 여인의 이야기(마 15:21-28)는 그 의미하는 바가 크다. 이 본문에 등장하는 예수는 처음에는 배타적인 입장의 목소리를 대변한다(15:24, 26 cf. 10). 그러나 그는 결국 가나안 여인의 믿음에 감동하여 종전의 배타적인 입장을 변경하고 이방 여인의 요청을 들어준다(15:28). 이러한 예수의 태도변화는 이방선교와 관련하여 긴장 가운데 있는 마태 공동체에게 분명한 메시지를 전해주고 있다. 마태는 특히 ‘선교담화’(10:5-42)에서 ‘제자들이란 그의 스승인 예수를 닮는다는, Imitatio Christi’의 주제를 부각시킨다. 그렇다면 가나안 여인의 이야기는 이방선교에 대해 배타적인 유대기독교인들로 하여금, 예수를 닮아 배타적인 입장을 철회하고 이방선교에 대해 마음을 열것을 요청하고 있는 것이다.
