본 논문의 목적은 NAFTA 협정이 미국의 자동차 산업내무역에 미친 영향을 분석하는 것이다. 먼저, 산업내무역을 측정하는데 일반적으로 이용되는 GL지수(Grubel-Lloyd)를 산출하여 1991~ 2013년 기간 동안 산업내무역 추이를 분석하였다. 분석결과, 자동차 산업에서 미국의 NAFTA 역내 산업내무역은 전반적으로 감소하는 추세였으며, 특히 화물차 분야의 수평적 산업내무역 감소가 두드러졌다. 이러한 시계열 변화를 실증적으로 뒷받침하기 위해 NAFTA 변수를 포함한 패널분석을 실시하였다. 실증분석, 결과 NAFTA 협정은 미국의 자동차 산업내무역에 부정적 영향을 주며, 특히 화물차의 역내 수평적 산업내무역을 크게 감소시킨 것으로 나타났다. 이는 산업내무역 변화에 대한 시계열 분석과 일치하는 결과로, NAFTA 협정 이후 역내 화물차 생산 및 교역구조가 크게 변화하였음을 시사한다.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the determinants of Intra-Industry Trade (IIT) in the U.S. automotive industry, especially focusing on the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). We divided IIT into two types, namely vertical and horizontal IIT, in order to calculate its Grubel-Lloyd (GL) index. First, our analysis of time series data from 1991 to 2013 revealed that IIT of U.S. automotive industry has decreased over time, with horizontal IIT, in particular, having undergone a dramatic decrease. Next, we undertook empirical analysis, mainly with a fixed effects model. Through this analysis, we found that the variable NAFTA has a negative effect on IIT in the U.S. automotive industry, especially on horizontal IIT within NAFTA countries. This result implies that NAFTA stimulates structural changes in the North American automotive industry, and each NAFTA member country has specialized in specific types of vehicles.
