<신가전>은 한 여자의 혼인에 얽힌 기구한 일생을 그 어머니와 여자 자신의 목소리를 통해 복합적으로 서술하고 있는 가사로서, 가사이면서도 서사 갈래의 시점과 전개방식을 취하고 있어 주목되는 작품이다. 유복녀로 고이 기른 딸을 좋은 신랑감을 골라 시집을 보내나 매파에게 속아 괴이한 용모의 고자 신랑을 맞게 되자, 어머니는 신랑을 쫓아 보내고 충격으로 죽게 되며, 딸은 삼년상을 치른 뒤 중이 되어 평생을 보낸다는 내용으로 되어 있다. 이 작품은 자신의 경험을 있는그대로 서술하던 일인칭 시점의 가사와 있을법한 타인의 경험을 허구적으로 구성하던 삼인칭 시점의 소설의 서술방법을 혼합하여 가사가 자신의 신변적 이야기에 머물러 있지 않고, 다양한 타인의 이야기로 영역을 확장시키고 있음을 보여준다. <신가전>은 조선조 사회에서 여성이 당면한 현실에 대한 여성의 대응 태도와 인식을 잘 드러내주고 있다. 특히 여성의 현실을 여성 스스로가 여성의 시각에서 그려내고 있다는 점에서 돋보인다. 이는 네 가지로 집약할 수 있는데, 어머니와 딸의 연대, 불합리한 혼인제도에 대한 비판, 성적 억압에 대한 거부, 부당한 사회규범에 대한 저항이 그것이다. 이 중 주인물이 처한 성적 현실에 대한 사실적인 묘사와 이에 대한 거부는 당대의 규범으로 볼 때 매우 일탈적인 양상을 보여 준다. <신가전>이 지니고 있는 이러한 대응과 인식은 여성에 대한 억압은 여전한 반면 여성의 의식은 높아져가던 조선 후기 여성문학의 양상을 잘 드러내며 근대 여성문학과 맞닿아 있다는 점에서 높이 평가할만하다.

This paper investigated how the life and consciousness of women is configurated in Gasa Singageon. Gasa Singageon is one of women's Gasa which has the narrative structure. This work has the high value, because it shows the conversion from the virtual narration to the fictional narration. As the results of this study, we could find that Gasa Singageon investigated here reveals the narrative characteristics and consciousness of women as follows. Gasa Singageon is composed of 'comfort-conflict-frustration-the attempt for the solution-solution'. It is similar with the classic novel. It shows that the life of Yangban women is changed from comfort to sufferings by marriage. Gasa Singageon has the compound viewpoint, i,e, the consolidation of the observer viewpoint and the major character viewpoint. It shows that this work is inclined to the novelization of Gasa. The consciousness of women configurated in Gasa Singageon are; the consciousness of the joint between a mother with a daughter, the resistance for the irrational marriage system, the rejection of the sexual oppression and the opposition for the wrong social rules. These narrative characteristics and consciousness of Gasa Singageon should be estimated importantly in the formation of the modern literature.
