<남정팔난기>는 장편소설과 여성영웅소설의 유형적 특징을 구유하고 있다. 본고는 <남정팔난기>의 여성 인물 월파와 운행자를 통해 여성 영웅으로서의 형상을 밝히고, 그들의 영웅성 발현 양상에 대하여 주목함으로써 <남정팔난기>의 소설사적인 위상을 탐구하였다. <남정팔난기>의 월파와 운행자는 전장에서 모사로서 역할을 담당하면서 여성 영웅으로 형상화되었다. 그러나 월파와 운행자의 영웅성의 발현 양상은 각각 변별적이다. 월파가 전투에 임하여 전세를 승리로 이끄는 능력을 발휘하고 있다면, 운행자는 합리적인 안목과 예지력으로 전세를 파악하는 능력을 지니고 있다. 이같은 월파와 운행자의 영웅 형상은 장편소설 및 여성영웅소설과 관계를 맺고 있다. 장편소설에서 여성이 전장에 나가 영웅적 능력을 발휘하는 경우는 매우 드물지만, 여성의 영웅성은 전략가라는 위치에서 발현될 때 긍정되고 전투에 직접 참여하는 여성의 경우 영웅성을 지녔다 하더라도 부정적으로 묘사된다. 반면, 여성영웅소설에서는 여성 영웅이 전투에 직접 참여하고 전승을 성취하면서 영웅성을 드러내는데, 그러한 인물에 대하여 호의적이다. 이로 볼 때 장편소설과 여성영웅소설에서 긍정적으로 표출하는 여성 영웅의 형상은 다르다. 그런데 <남정팔난기>에는 각각 임진전투형(臨陣戰鬪型) 여성 영웅과 유악귀감형(幄龜鑑型) 여성 영웅이 각각 월파와 운행자로 나타나 작품 안에 공존하고 있다. 이는 <남정팔난기>가 장편소설에서 보이는 여성 영웅의 형상과 관계있는 동시에 여성영웅소설의 여성 영웅의 형상과도 관련이 있다는 사실을 의미한다. 즉, <남정팔난기>는 장편소설에서 여성영웅소설로 전변해가는 과정을 보여주는 유의미한 작품인 것이다.

This fact means that <Namjeongpalnangi> is located at the process of change from long Korean novels to heroine novels.
