고전 소설의 능동적 보조인물 가운데 ‘재치있는 시비군’은 신분과 성별 모두 열세에 놓이면서도 그 비범한 자질로 인해 고전소설의 여성형상에서 문제적인 위치를 차지하는 인물유형이다. 본고에서는 이러한 재치있는 시비군 중 <도앵행>의 ‘장난’ 등에 대해 살펴보았다. 이들은 주인을 도우면서도 자신만의 독특한 의식을 드러내면서 전체구조에서 상당한 비중을 차지한다는 점에서 여타의 재치있는 시비군과 유사한 모습을 보이고 있었다. 한편, 주인을 위한 계획을 스스로의 주관 하에 실행하며, 당대 최고의 名士인 君子型 인물을 일깨우고, 혼인하기를 거부한 채 그녀들끼리 자매의 친분을 맺고 동락하는 ‘자매애(sisterhood)’의 실현을 보여준다는 점에서 이들은 독특한 면모를 지니고 있었다.이러한 양상을 토대로, 먼저 재치있는 시비군 전반이 여성의식의 발현과 관련하여 지니고 있는 보편적인 의의에 대해 살펴보았다. 비범한 자질을 갖추고 있으면서도 사회적으로 최약자인 하층/여성으로서 이들이 겪게 되는 고뇌는, 사회적으로 최강자인 상층/남성에 대한 비판적 목소리로 대체되고 있었다. 자각적이고 합리적인 의식으로 남성중심의 사회에 대한 적실한 문제제기를 하고 있다는 점에서 이들은 공통의 입지를 갖고 있었다. 그 중에서도 <도앵행>의 재치있는 시비군은, 행위의 주체성이 강조됨으로써 형식적인 보조인물의 허울에서 벗어나 실질적인 주동인물로 부상해 가는 양상이 매우 뚜렷이 나타나고 있으며, 유연하고 합리적인 삶의 태도를 통해 상층의 경직된 의식적 결함들을 시정보완할 수 있는 ‘대타적 존재’로서의 의미가 부각되고, 하층여성들 간의 자매애의 실현양상을 보여줌으로써 여성의 새로운 삶의 모델을 제시해준다는 점에서 또 다른 의의를 지니고 있었다. <도앵행>에서는 여타의 재치있는 시비군이 지닌 특징들을 양각화함으로써, 이들을 더욱 문제적인 인물형상으로 특화시키고 있었다.
