20세기 이후 지속적으로 창작 전승되고 있는 규방가사는 그 형태적 측면이나 주제적 지향에 있어서 전통을 계승하면서도 시대적 변화를 적극적으로 수용하고 있다는 점에서 유의미한 가치를 지닌다. 작자에 따라서 문체나 표현에서 변화를 모색하기도 하고, 주제적 관심의 범위를 외부로 확장하기도 한다. 물론 두 측면에서 모두 변화를 보여주는 경우도 있다. 또한 이러한 변화의 동인은 매체의 변화, 역사적 요인, 가학과 신학문 등 매우 복합적이다. 따라서 20세기 여성작자들의 가사작품은 섬세한 해석적 접근을 필요로 한다. 본고는 이중 해방 이전과 해방 이후에 걸쳐 가사를 창작한 은촌 조애영의 작품을 중심으로 문체와 현실인식에 있어서 어떠한 변화를 보여주고 있는지를 고찰하였다. 먼저 은촌 조애영 가사의 문체상의 특징은 4음 4보격의 고정화, 직접인용 방식의 활용, 감정 과잉의 직서적 표현 등으로 정리할 수 있다. 이러한 특징들은 현대 규방가사의 형태에서 공통적으로 드러나기도 하고, 은촌 개인의 개성에서 비롯되기도 하며, 역사적 경험에서 형성되기도 한다. 다음으로 은촌의 의식에서 주요한 부분을 형성하고 있는 것은 대사회적 문제의식이라 할 수 있는데, 이는 가학과 신학문을 통해 자연스럽게 형성된 것으로 볼 수 있다. 은촌의 항일의식이나 독재체제에 대한 비판적 태도는 영양주실마을이라는 작자의 출신 배경과 함께 여성교육을 통해 터득한 것이다. 또한 작자는 사람에 대한 다양한 관심과 깊이 있는 이해를 보여주고 있어서 현실인식의 측면에서 여성의식의 일단을 드러내고 있다. 여기서 인물에 대한 작자의 관심은 곧 여성주체로서 작자의 정신적 성숙이 어떻게 이루어져 왔는지를 이해하는 경로가 되기도 한다. 이처럼 은촌 조애영은 문체와 여성의식의 측면에서 다양한 변화의 징후들을 드러내는데 이는 작자 스스로 긴 창작의 시기 동안 전통을 계승하면서도 끊임없는 변화를 모색해 왔음을 보여주는 것이라고 할 수 있다.

The purpose of this paper is to study literary style and women consciousness of Kyubanggasa's in the 20's century. The subject of study is Eunchon Jo-eyoung's Gasas. Kyubanggasa's in the 20's century inherit tradition and take needs of the times. Motives of change are media, historical events, home education etc. Literary style of Eunchon Jo-eyoung's gasas shows three characteristics. First characteristic is quadrisyllabic-tetrameter. Second characteristic is application of direct quote. Third characteristic is expression of overemotion. These cause are modern literary genre's style, author's personality, historical experience. Women consciousness of Eunchon Jo-eyoung's gasas is due to a critical mind about society. First consciousness is anti-Japanese sentiments. Second consciousness is anti-dictatorship.
