기술은 비약적으로 발전하고 있다. 그 놀라운 발전의 한 지점에서 우리는 이미지가 만들어내는 스펙터클을 바라보고 체험하고 있다. 사이버 공간을 만들어내는 이미지는 우리에게 어떠한 의미를 갖는가? 낙관론이 이야기하듯 개방성과 수평성을 실현하면서 새로운 문명의 길을 열어주고 있는가? 우리는 이 문제에 답하고자 한다. 프랑스의 비판적 기술사상가인 엘륄(Jacques Ellul)의 사유를 통해 우리는 기술과 이미지의 문제를 새로운 관점에서 접근하고자 한다. 엘륄에게서 이미지는 기술사회를 정당화하는 이데올로기이자, 초월과 상징이라는 인간의 존재론적 지평을 무력화하는 힘으로 등장한다.
The technology is developing rapidly. We can see and feel, in its magnific growth, the spectacles of visual images. What significance does the images of cyber spaces give us? As the optimists insist it, does they make the new way for social openness and horizontality? This study is oriented to answer these questions. For this purpose, by observing the technological thought of J. Ellul, French social thinker, we approach the problem of technology and image. Ellul thinks that image is essentially the ideology legitimizing the technological society and the power paralyzing the human will for the transcendence and symbol.
