Study on a literature transmission of Arang[阿娘]’s folk tales - focusing on narrative compositions and character figures

본고는 문헌으로 전승되는 <아랑설화>를 대상으로, 그 각 편의 특성과 유형을 구성 방식과 형상 중심으로 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. <아랑설화>는 한 세기가 넘는 시간 동안 문헌 전승된 것으로, 문헌들을 살피다보면 이들 사이의 통시적 관계가 드러날 수 있는데, 시간에 따른 <아랑설화>의 변화나 영향 관계를 고찰하는 것은 이 논문의 부수적인 목적이다. <아랑설화>가 시간 역전의 구성을 취할 경우, 사건 전말은 원혼의 발화로 밝혀진다. 이때 여성의 신분이 기생으로 나타나기도 하는데, 양반 여성의 신분일 때보다 끔찍하고 잔인한 모습으로 나타나 살인의 현장을 증명한다. 아랑설화가 시간 순서의 구성을 취할 경우, 사건 전말은 이미 서술을 통해 밝혀진 상태이다. 이때에는 범인이 부사의 딸에 대해 욕정이상의 감정을 가지는 것으로 그려지기도 한다. 이렇게 <아랑설화>에서 시간 구성-여성의 신분-범행의 동기가 긴밀한 관련을 가지고 있다. 문헌으로 전승된 <아랑설화>의 이본들은 구성 방식, 아랑의 신분, 원혼의 형상, 범인의 욕망과 살인 동기 등에 있어 각각의 개성을 가지고 있다. 그 종합으로서의 <아랑설화>는 긴장/동감, 슬픔/괴기, 증오/연민을 경험하게 한다. 특히 근대의 아랑은 가장 유교화된 모습으로 그려지기도 하고 그 범인은 가장 낭만적 모습으로 그려지기도 한다. <아랑설화>를 통해 본 근대 설화 문화는 극단화의 경향성을 가진다.

This article investigates the characteristics of Arang[阿娘]’s folk tales which have been transformed into several written legends through a study of their narrative composition and central figures. This legendry is transmitted over one hundred years. This study will be expected to reveal the changes and influences among them. When Arang folk tales are narrated in a time-reversal-composition style, Arang’s speech reveals an underlying message buried in the text. At that time, Arang’s status are often represented as gisaeng[妓生]. The gisaeng Arang provides proof at a murder scene which is more horrific due to the fact that the victim is a woman of noble birth. While the folk tales are narrated in time-order-composition, the whole picture of the incident is told by a narrator. In this case, the murderer’s inner thoughts are expressed not to indulge in sexual desire but rather in love. In any folk tale, the composition-women’ status-the motive of the crime has close relations. In this sense, the different versions of these stories have their own individuality. The complete collection of Arang’s tales cause different text effects such as suspension/sympathy, sorrow/bizarre and hate/pity. Particularly, Arang which were produced more in modern times is presented with most Confucian figures and the murderer is most romantic figure. These folk tales in modern times tend to be extreme.
