본 논문은 『주역』의 핵심적 개념인 時에 대하여 고찰하였다. 『周易』에서 논하고 있는 易․變化․四時․陰陽․日月․生成․運行 등은 모두 時와 떨어져서 이해될 수 없는 것이다. ‘時’는 『周易』의 학문적 체계와 내용을 이해할 수 있는 가장 중요한 개념이라 하겠다. 『주역』은 변화에 대한 학문으로 天道의 운행원리와 인간 삶의 깊은 이치를 담고 있기 때문에 수 천년 동안 동북아 漢字 문화권에서는 가장 근원적인 학문으로 존숭되어 왔다. 먼저 『周易』의 학문적 구조인 天地人 三才之道의 입장에서 時를 고찰하였다. 『주역』에서 時는 단순히 時間의 의미가 아니라 마친 즉 시작이 있는(終始) 天道 운행이 드러나는 것이며, 이것은 인간의 인식을 넘어선 영원한 현재인 瞬間(刹那)을 의미하고 있다. 또 人道 있어서 時는 君子가 本性 자각을 통해 天地之心(道)을 깨우치는 것과, 천하에 사업을 실천하는 것이라 하겠다. 時는 64괘를 일관하는 개념으로 六爻重卦가 모두 時를 나타내지만 직접 괘 이름에 時를 붙인 卦와 時義(時의 뜻)를 붙인 괘, 時用(時의 작용)을 붙인 괘 그리고 時之義를 붙인 괘를 통해 時의 의미를 확충하였다. 또 時는 變化와 직접 연계되는데, 變化를 2가지 입장에서 논하고 있다. 天文의 세계에서는 形而上者인 道가 자기 전개 작용에 의해 形而下者인 器로 드러나는 것이며, 人文의 세계에서는 天下에 성인의 도를 실천하여 感化시키는 것이다. 따라서 변화의 의미와 時가 일치하는 것이다. 본 연구는 그 동안 묻혀왔던 時의 본질적 의미를 찾아내는 작업으로 『周易』의 易道를 올바로 이해할 수 있는 방법이 될 것이다. 이는 『周易』의 학문적 내용뿐만 아니라 先秦儒學의 학문적 근본이 무엇인지를 밝히는 것이다.

This paper is a study focused on Chi(時) which is the key concept of I Ching. We can not understand Yi(易)․change(變化)․Sishi(四時)․Yinyang(陰陽)․Riyue(日月)․Shengcheng(生成)․Yunxing(運行) in I Ching without understanding Time. Time is the key word that any academic system focused on Ching will contain as well as the contents of I Ching. I Ching is a study about change and contains the operation principle of the way of heaven(天道) and true meaning of human life. And it has been respected by the most fundamental disciplines in the Northeast Hanzi(漢字) cultures for thousands of years. In this paper, Time was studied from the point of view of Tian․De․Ren Sancaizhidao(天地人 三才之道) which is an academic structure of I Ching. Time in I Ching is not as simple as the question of time but rather means that the concept of time is heavenly and that the end is truly only the beginning. Time is a saint that realizes Tiandezhixin(天地之心) through the awakening of human nature and practices that work in the world in the way of humankind(人道). Time is a concept that pierces all through the Sixty Four Hexagrams(64卦). All six lines of each Hexagram(六爻重卦) show time and its expanded meaning through a division into the trigram(卦) direct including time to its name, the trigram which contains time’s meaning, another trigram attaching the action of time and the trigram which attaches Shizhiyi(時之義). Time connects to change; I Ching expresses change from two points of view. Tao(道) that is the Xingershangzhe(形而上者) is exposed to a container(器) which is the Xingerxiazhe(形而下者) by self-expanding action in the world through the way of Heaven. Saint influences people with practices of Tao in the world towards the ways of humans. So the mean of change agrees with Time. The purpose of this study to find the essential meaning of Time and this is the way that can be understood through the Yidao(易道) of I Ching. And also this will be the way that finding what academic contexts and fundamental academic discipline of Confucianism are.
