예수 그리스도의 첫 메시지는 주지하는 바와 같이 회심요청의 선포이다. 회심은 근본적으로 하나님을 향한 한 인간의 인격의 총체인 마음의 180도 전향을 뜻한다. 바울의 회심사상 역시 같은 맥락을 유지하고 있다. 유대교에서 인간의 마음은 지.정.의 3요소로 구성된 것으로 이해하는 것처럼 바울은 인간의 회심을 이에 따라서 지성적 회심, 감성적 회심, 의지적 회심으로 단계적으로 설명하고 있다. 회심의 목적은 궁극적으로 그리스도의 형상에 도달하는 것으로 회심의 진정성은 율법의 완성으로서 이웃사랑 혹은 성령의 열매로 표현된 신앙의 도덕성 내지는 신앙인격의 성화로 판별된다. 그래서 회심은 단 한 번의 사건이 아니라 인간의 전 생애를 걸쳐 진행되는 구원의 과정이다.
The proclamation of conversion is known to be the first message of Jesus Christ. Conversion means in essence the total about-face of the heart of the human being to God. Paul's thoughts on conversion remain in the same context as well. In Judaism, it is understood that the heart of a person is composed of 3 elements, namely intelligence, emotion(feeling) and intention(will). In accordance with this traditional viewpoint, Paul seems to have insisted on the threefold structure of the conversion of the human: intellectual conversion, emotional conversion, and intentional conversion. According to Paul, the goal of conversion is to conform to the image of Jesus Christ, and it's authenticity can be proved only through love of neighbor as fulfillment of the law, or through morality of faith or sacredness of the faith personality described as fruit of the Holy Spirit. Therefore conversion is not a single event, but an ongoing process of salvation developing over the lifetime of a human being.
