본 논문은 미국 출신 여성화가 조지아 오키프(Georgia O'Keeffe, 1887~1986)의 초기작품 여섯 점(1915-1923)을 분석심리학적으로 고찰하고 오키프의 작품 속에 들어있는그녀의 심리를 분석하는 데 있다. 그녀는 꽃을 그리는 화가로 그녀의 작품들은 평범한꽃들을 풍부한 색채를 가지고 확대하여 표현하는 특징이 있다. 그녀의 그림은 사실적인꽃을 묘사하였음에도 불구하고 마치 추상화처럼 강렬한 정감을 대중에게 전달하여 미국미술계에서 독보적인 위치를 차지하고 있다. 그녀의 이러한 예술과 창조적 작품들은자신의 무의식 세계를 표현하고 있다. 본 논문에서 다루려는 그녀의 작품들 역시 개인의 무의식세계를 표현하면서 동시에 원형적인 무의식을 표출하고 있다. 그녀는 인간이가진 무의식속의 무한한 잠재력과 창조성을 작품을 통하여 의식으로 끌어올림으로써자신의 삶의 방향을 찾아간 듯 보인다. 본 연구는 오키프의 인생 전반기 심리적 변화과정을 담은 초기작품 6점을 분석함으로써 분석심리학적 관점에서 작가의 심리분석을시도하고자 한다. 주제어:
This article examines how some of early works (six pieces produced during the period of 1915-1923) of Georgia O’Keeffe, American artist, develop in terms of analytic psychology. Known for having flowers, especially ordinary ones, as the subject in her work, O’Keeffe tended to make richly colored paintings of flowers seen at highly close range. Even as she worked representationally, these paintings conveyed such a sense of energy and strength that abstract paintings would give. This enabled her to occupy a unique position in the world of art in America. Her works of our concern here in this article are to be seen as representing the unconscious process of the artist. At the same time, they express the collective unconscious and the archetypes. With the infinite potential and creativity of the unconscious manifested above the threshold of consciousness, she is undergoing a transformation through which her true self-image pervades the whole inner world. Six of O’Keeffe’s early works that show the process of her psychological transformation will be examined from the analytic psychological point of view.
