본 연구의 목적은 히틀러의 나치 이데올로기와 맞서 싸웠던 고백교회(Confessing Church)의 저항을 기독교윤리적 관점에서 검토하는 것이다. “독일 그리스도인들” (German Christians)은 보수적인 “질서의 신학”에 근거하여 히틀러의 명령을 따랐다. 그러나 고백교회는 오직 예수 그리스도만을 따랐고, “독일 그리스도인들”과 싸웠다. 이것은 하나님 앞에서 참된 교회와 거짓된 교회를 구별하는 싸움, “교회투쟁”이었다. 고백교회는 바르멘 신학선언(Barmer Theologische Erklrärung)을 통해 나치의 정치적 도구로 전락한 교회의 악한 모습을 폭로했다. 고백교회는 본회퍼를 견습목회자들을 교육하는 핑켄발데 신학원의 책임자로 임명했다. 고백교회는 1946년에 슈투트가르트에서 히틀러에 대항하여 더 용기 있게 싸우지 못했던 것을 참회했다. 고백교회에 대한 평가는 객관적인 관점에서 보완될 필요가 있다. 먼저, 고백교회의 저항은 히틀러에 대한 정치적인 저항과는 거리가 있다. 둘째, 바르멘 신학선언은 나치의 인종주의 정책을 직접적으로 언급하지 않았다. 셋째, 특히, 고백교회는 1938년에 히틀러의 충성맹세서약을 거부하지 않고 받아들였다. 그러나 본회퍼는 유태인을 위해 변호했고, 히틀러에 맞서 끝까지 싸웠다. 예수 그리스도는 교회의 주님만이 아니라, 세상의 주님이시다. 세상의 불의한 권력이 하나님의 뜻을 거스릴때, 교회는 불의한 권력을 비판하고 견제하는 “하나님의 위임”의 역할을 잘 감당해야한다.
The purpose of this study is to review the resistance of the Confessing Church that fought against the Nazi ideologies of Adolf Hitler, from the Christian ethical point of view. The conservative “German Christians” followed the orders of Hitler, based on the Theology of Order. However, the Confessing Church followed only Jesus Christ and struggled with the “German Christians”. This was the “Church Struggle” that distinguished the true church from the false church. The Confessing Church, through the Theological Declaration of Barmen, exposed the evil side of the church which was used as a political tool for the Nazi. The Confessing Church also offered Dietrich Bonhoeffer the position of the head of Finkenwalde Seminary, a place that trained new pastors. In 1946, the Confessing Church openly repented on not fighting back more courageously against Hitler at Stuttgart. The evaluation of the Confessing Church should be reviewed in an objective point of view. First of all, the struggle of the Confessing Church was far from the direct and political criticism. Second, the Barmen Declaration failed to address the Nazi racial policy. Third, the Confessing Church did not reject the allegiance to Hitler, rather it pledged the fidelity to him. But Bonhoeffer spoke out for the Jews and fought against Hitler. Jesus Christ is not only the Lord of the Church, but the Lord of this world. When the unjust authorities of the world go against God’s will, the church should criticize them; faithfully acting as the “Mandate of God”.
