본 논문은 신종테러범죄, 이른바 뉴테러리즘에 대한 국내외 연구현황에 관하여 조사・소개하였다. 우선 신종테러리즘을 단순히 새로운 기술을 활용한 테러행위로 파악하기 보다는 전통적 테러리즘과 그 목적이나 방법, 효과 등이 구분되는 새로운 테러리즘, 특히 미국 9.11테러 이후 미국 학계에서 활발히 논의되고 있는 이른바 뉴테러리즘(new terrorism)으로 파악하고, 그 개념과 원인, 유형, 대처방안에 관한 국내외 연구현황을 차례로 소개하였다. 연구방법론과 관련하여서는 언어네트워크방법론을 활용하여 대(對)테러리즘에 관한 국내의 연구 경향을 분석한 몇몇 선행연구들을 소개하였는데, 이들 연구들은 국내 테러리즘 관련 그간 연구들의 관심이 주로 무엇이었는지를 핵심주제어, 예컨대, “테러”, “대테러”, “북한”, “미국”, “사이버테러” 등의 주제어를 중심으로 알게 해준다는 이점이 있고, 연도별로 어떤 주제에 상대적으로 연구초점이 더욱 맞추어졌었는지를 알게해주고, 특정분야의 연구경향을 분석함에 있어서 연구자의 주관적 평가가 개입할 여지가 없다는 장점이 있지만, (뉴)테러리즘과 관련하여 보다 구체적인 연구상황을 알고자 하는 수요를 충족시키기에는 부족함이 있다. 따라서 신종테러리즘에 대한 국내외 연구현황을 주제로 하고 있는 본 논문은, 비록 연구자의 주관적 평가가 개입할 위험이 있겠지만, 신종테러리즘 관련 그간의 국내외 연구들을 취합하여 주제별로 분류한 후 각각의 논의상황을 간략하게 소개하는 방식을 취하였다. 구체적으로 제2장에서는 뉴테러리즘의 개념, 원인, 특성에 대한 학계논의를 소개하였고, 제3장에서는 뉴테러리즘의 유형에 관한 연구현황을 사이버테러리즘, 핵테러리즘, 생화학테러리좀, 다중이용시설테러리즘으로 나누어 소개하였다. 다중이용시설테러리즘의 경우, 항공테러, 지하철테러, 초고층빌딩테러, 해상테러로 세부적으로 나누어 관련 연구현황을 살펴보았다. 이어서 제4장에서는 뉴테러리즘의 대응방안에 대한 연구현황을 소개하였고, 끝으로 제5장에서는 앞의 논의들을 종합적으로 검토, 정리하였다.
This article reviews the research trends of the new terrorism in Korea and other countries and begins by analyzing pros and cons of studies on the research trends of terrorism studies by the semantic network analysis method, followed by reviewing studies on the concept of the new terrorism and its causes and characteristics. Based on the concept of the new terrorism, which especially after the events of 9/11 has come into the spotlight and has been deemed to have different structures, aims and methods from typical (or old) terrorism, this article examines studies on the various types of the new terrorism such as cyber terrorism, nuclear terrorism, bioterrorism and public facilities terrorism. Lastly, this article introduces studies on effective countermeasures of each type of the new terrorism and compares the differences of the new terrorism studies between Korea and other countries including Germany, Britain and the United States.
