근대한국불교의 성격을 규정하는 여러 측면 가운데 ‘불교개혁’은 중요한 키워드임에 틀림 없을 것이다. 불교개혁이라는 측면에서 근대 한국불교를 연 여러 선각자들 가운데 중요한 인물인 백학명(白鶴鳴, 1867∼1929)과 소태산 박중빈(少太山 朴重彬, 1891∼1943)의 관계를 살피는 것이 본 연구의 목적이다. 학명과 소태산은 고향이 같다. 소태산은 대각 이전부터 학명과 교류가 있었고, 불교교학에 관한 지식과 불교개혁에 관한 여러 정보를 얻었을 것으로 추측된다. 두 사람은 1919년부터 1923년에 이르는 거의 4년간을 봉래산에서 지척에두고 거주하며 선문답과 사상적 교류를 한 사이이다. 뿐만 아니라 불교개혁을위하여 내장산에서 함께 일을 도모할 것을 고려하기도 하였다. 종래의 원불교교학자들은 소태산과 학명과의 사상적 연계성에 대한 연구를 소홀히 한 경향이있었다. 그러나 본 논문에서는 학명과 소태산의 교류는 오랜 기간에 걸쳐 이루어졌으며, 그것도 인간적 교류만이 아닌 사상적 교류도 상당부분 이루어졌다는 것을 증명하였다. 그러한 작업을 통하여 불교와 원불교의 관계를 규명하는 데에중요한 시사점이 생길 수도 있다.
Reform the buddhism is must be most important key word to define the identityof modern korean buddhism. The purpose of this article is analysis the relationshipbetween Baek Hak Myung and Park Joon Bin who are the important person amongthe foresighters in modern korean buddhism. Baek Hak Myung and Park Joon Bin have same hometown. I suppose that BaekHak Myung and Park Joon Bin had been communicate before Park Joon Bin’s greatenlightenment, Park Joon Bin had many informations about buddhism from BaekHak Myung. Two man not only had communicated the thought four years livingBongrae mountain but also to try the reform the buddhism together in Naejangmountain. I tried to proof the relationship between two man has long time more than mostof the scholars purposed before. I expect that to reveal the relation betweenbuddhism and wonbuddhism through this article.
