이 글에서는 한국의 신종교의 하나인 통일교가 짧은 기간 내에 세계적인 종교로 성장할 수 있는 근본 원인이 무엇인가에 관하여 논지를 전개하고자 한다. 통일교 세계선교에 관한 이론적 기초는 원리강론, 문선명선생말씀선집, 통일사상 요강 그리고 통일교가 편찬한 각종 자료를 통해서 얻을 수 있다. 특히, 원리강론은 통일교 신자들의 신앙과 실천운동의 이론적 기초를 제공하는 가장 중요한 경전이다. 세부 항목으로는 통일교 세계선교의 목적, 방법, 과정 및 특성에 대하여 논하고자 한다. 통일교의 세계선교를 위한 특성으로는 교회설립자인 문선명 선생의 강력한 리더십, 하나님의 조국창건 즉 천일국 건설을 위한 섭리적인 선교, 통일교 축복가정의 확대 및 그 공동체를 통한 심정문화의 선교방법 시도, 교회전도 활동과 외곽단체 즉 승공활동 남북통일운동 평화운동 등의 활동을 동시에병행하는 선교전략 그리고 통일교 선교사들의 헌신적인 태도와 신앙심 등을 대표적으로 지목할 수 있다. 통일교의 세계선교는 교회 내의 내부적인 변화와 더불어 제2의 도약기를 맞이하고 있다. 통일교는 이제 더 튼튼하고, 활기찬 세계선교시대를 기대하고 있다.
This thesis will focus on the fundamental causes of how Korea’s new religion, theUnification Church, can become a global religion in a short period of time. Thefundamental theory of the Unification Church’s world missionary activities can bederived from the Divine Principle, the Unificationist guidelines, the collection ofRev. Sun Myung Moon’s speeches, and anthologies that were published andcompiled by the Unification Church. In particular, the Divine Principle is the mostimportant sacred book that provides the grounds for Unificationists’ faith andpractical guidance. In the latter part of the thesis, I will discuss the characteristics of the UnificationChurch towards a global mission guided by the strong leadership of the founder,Rev. Sun Myung Moon. Furthermore, I will discuss other features of providentialmissionary activities for the establishment of God’s homeland, Cheon Il Guk. Theyinclude the culture of heart (shimjeongmunhwa) that stems from the community ofthe Blessed Families in the Unification Church, the mission to simultaneouslymanage missionary activities and affiliated organizations, and finally, the devotedfaith and attitude of the Unification Church missionaries. The world mission of the Unification Church is approaching its second leap towards a new era. The Unification Church anticipates an era of missions around theworld that is much more robust than ever before with internal and external changes.
