본고는 서원의 기능과 역할을 살피고, 현대 다문화사회에서 서원의 기능과 역할이 다문화 가치를 창조하는 데 기여할 수 있는지를 탐색하고, 그에 대한 프로그램을 제언하려는 연구이다. 이를 위해서 포은선생 배향서원 중 임고서원(臨皐書院)을 중심으로 살펴보고자 한다. 왜냐하면 포은선생 배향서원 중 임고서원이 지역사회를 기반으로 한 문화콘텐츠 프로그램을 현재 가장 잘 활용하고 있기 때문이다. 서원은 교육기관으로서 여러 가지 목적을 갖고 있지만, 성리학적 이상을 바탕으로 도덕적 인격 수양을 지향하는 공동체였다. 서원의 이러한 기능은 현대 다문화사회에서 타자와의 윤리가 무엇보다 중요하다는 점에서 현대적으로 재해석할 필요가 있다. 본고는 서원문화재에 대한 선행연구들을 토대로 제2장에서 서원의 기능과 역할을 살피고, 제3장에서는 서원이 갖고 있는 여러 가지 기능을 활용하여 다문화 가치를 창조하기 위한 프로그램을 제언한다. 이 연구를 통해서 포은 사상의 현대적 재조명이 가능할 것이며, 문화유산으로서 서원의 현대적 활용 방안에 대한 후속 연구의 가교 역할이 가능할 수 있을 것이다.
In this study, I’ll explore the functions and roles of the Seowon, how they contribute to create the multicultural value, and propose a program about them. To do this, I’ll investigate Imgo Seowon(臨皐書院), one of the the Seowons of Worshiping Poeun. Because, it is one of the best Seowon that utilize program in cultural contents well on the basis of local society. Originally, Seowon has various objectives as the educational institution, and it is the community that moral personality-cultivation oriented based on the Neo-Confucianism as well. The functions of Seowon need to be reinterpreted modernistically in the point of the importance of the ethics with the Other in the contemporary multicultural society. I’ll examine its’ functions and roles based on the major preceding researches on the Seowon Cultural Treasures in chapter 2. Then, I’ll suggest a program to create multicultural value to utilize the various functions with Seowon in chapter 3. In sum, through the research, the contemporary reillumination of the Poeun’s Thought shall be feasible and possible act as a bridge between preceding researches and future studies on the modern utilization of the Seowon as a cultural heritage.
