It is now commonly agreed in contemporary literary theory that the reader plays a central role in interpretation. Texts just do not mean things on their own; meaning emerges in the act of reading. The emergence of the reader in interpretation has become so central that it has become common practice to refer to the interpretation of a text as ‘a reading’. While my own recent work on prophetic books (Isaiah and Zechariah) has emphasized the role of the reader in interpretation, in this lecture I want to consider the place of the text in interpretation.
