Totality and Its Remainders: Political Philosophy and Cultural Semiotics

이 논문은 전체로서의 체계와 그것이 남긴 잉여의 관계라는 문제의식을 통해 로컬리티의 문제를 다시 생각해보려는 시도이다. 잉여는 전체의 관점에서 봤을 때 불필요한 것으로 간주되는 체계의 부분을 뜻한다. 동시에 그것은 모든 것을 통합하는 유기적인 전체성이라는 관념을 내부로부터 흩어놓는 어떤 불가능성의 자리, 전체라는 개념을 통해 포괄되지 않는 어떤 잔여의 경험을 적시하면서 동시에 전체성의 언어 자체를 되묻지 않을 수 없게끔 하는 본연적 반성의 계기를 가리키는 이름이기도 하다. 이 글에서는 이와 같은 잉여의 개념이 철학적으로 전유되는 양상, 특히 그것이 ‘정치’를 재사유하기 위한 핵심적인 계기로서 랑시에르, 바디우, 아감벤 등의 동시대 철학자들에 의해 탐구되는 과정을 살펴본다. 또한 이 고찰의 과정에서 러시아의 문화기호학자 유리 로트만의 이론, 특히 체계의 메타언어 및 대화의 메커니즘에 관한 후기의 사유를 주요한 참조점으로 삼는다. 로트만의 사유는 정치의 차원에 집중된 앞선 논의를 보충하면서, 전체성과 잉여의 메커니즘을 상징적(기호) 체계 일반의 그것으로 확장하는데 도움을 줄 것이다. ‘잉여’의 개념과 연관된 (탈)전체화 과정의 체계적이고 위상학적인 측면들을, 현대 정치철학과 문화기호학 이론을 중심으로 살펴봄으로써, ‘중심-주변’의 프레임을 ‘전체-잉여’의 프레임을 통해 재고해보고, 이를 단순 전복과 재중심화의 곤궁에 봉착한 로컬맅티의 딜레마 극복을 위한 ‘다른’ 상상의 자극체로 삼고자 한다.

The purpose of this paper is to rethink the issue of locality through the prism of relationship between totality and its remainders. Remainder is a part of the system which is regarded as unnecessary and surplus from the point of view of totality. At the same time it is a place where an idea of organic totality becomes impossible and in that sense a moment which makes the language of totality itself being questioned. In this paper will be examined various aspects of philosophical appropriation of this notions by contemporary philosophers such as Ranciere, Badiou and Agamben. And in the process of this examination the Semiotic theory of Yuri. Lotman, in particular his late thought on special mechanisms of metalanguage and dialogue will be used as useful reference for comparison and complement. Argument of Lotman makes up for precedent inquires which focused on the problem of politics, helping to developing the issue of totality and remainders into the symbolic system in general. Replacing the frame of “centre - periphery” by the frame of “totality - remainder” by thorough and critical inquiry of the topological aspects in the process of disidentification which is related with the notion of remainders. This attempt could be a productive stimulator for the dilemma of locality which seems to be caught in the deadlock of overturning and recentering.
