우리는 자유라는 하나의 단어를 동일한 개념으로 사용하고 있지 않다. 철학적- 정치적 논의 안에서 ‘자유란 무엇인가’하는 질문은 오늘날에도 여전히 가장 논쟁적인 다툼 중의 하나이며 동시에 자유에 관한 특정한 견해들은 철학적-정치적 입장을 대변하는 것이기도 하다. 한나 아렌트(Hannah Arendt)에게 자유의 개념은 그녀의 정치적 사유에서 가장 처음이며 또한 가장 중심을 차지하고 있다. 본 논문은 아렌트가 자유를 정치적 현상으로 이해하고 있다는 테제를 중심으로 그녀의 정치적 자유 개념을 분석할 것이다. 아렌트의 정치적 자유개념에 대한 분석적 시도는 우선은 정치와 자유의 관계에 대한 새로운 관점을 제공함으로서 오늘날의 정치의 무의미성을 극복하기 위한 논의에 일조할 수 있을 것이다. 또한 아렌트의 정치적 자유의 개념을 통해 오로지 개인과 개인의 소유로부터의 출발하는 신-자유주의적 자유의 패러다임을 넘어서, 관계와 연대 안에서 발생하는 자유를 모색해 볼 수도 있을 것이다. 그와 함께 마지막으로는 요즘 한국 사회에서 회자되고 있는 소위 민주주의의 위기와 관련해서, 민주주의적 원리에 상응하는 정치적-공적 자유란 어떤 것인지에 대한 질문의 답을 위한 의미 있는 토대들을 제공할 수도 있을 것이다.

The word freedom is not used in a uniform way. The question “What is freedom?” still remains to be one of the most controversial issues in philosophy and politics. A specific opinion of freedom depends on philosophical and political view. The conception of freedom is central thought in Hannah Arendt’s theory. Freedom is analyzed as political phenomenon in this paper. This analysis leads to dispute for overcoming the meaninglessness of politics in the present by providing a new perspective of the relationship between politics and freedom. This also seeks the freedom generated from relationship and solidarity over neoliberalism which starts from individual and individual property. Finally, regarding to crisis of democracy this contributes to lay the foundation for answer of what the political and public freedom correspondent with democracy is.
