“佔畢齋 金宗直은 文章을 한 사람이지 道學을 한 사람이 아니다.”라는 退溪 李滉의 말은 그가 만년에 자신의 기존 생각을 바꾸어서 점필재 김종직을 평가한 말로 널리 알려져 있다. 그리고 이 말은 점필재 김종직을 學者가 아닌 文人으로 수정해서 평가한 말로 인식되어, 퇴계 이황 사후에 전개된 이른바 道學의 時代에 점필재 김종직을 우리나라 道學의 歷史에서 그 위상을 대폭 축소시키는 주요한 근거로 활용되었다. 또 지금도 변함없이 점필재 김종직이라는 인물을 평가하는 주요한 근거로 활용되고 있다. 그러나 관련 자료를 실증적으로 검토해보면, 퇴계 이황의 이 말은 점필재 김종직에 대해 부정적으로 평가하려는 일부 사람들이 퇴계 이황이 일정하게 제한된 상황 속에서 상대, 곧 주로 제자들의 일시적인 물음에 답한 말을 그 자신들의 입장에서 적절하게 潤色한 것, 그렇게 해서 퇴계 이황을 의빙한 것이지, 퇴계 이황의 本意와는 상관없는 말임을 알 수 있다. 도리어 퇴계 이황은 일생 동안 변함없이 점필재 김종직을 존경하면서 그가 우리나라 도학의 역사에서 큰 공헌을 한 인물로 높이 평가하는 한편, 그가 주로 거주했던 밀양에 그의 서원을 세우는 데 몹시 적극적이었음을 확인해볼 수 있다. 퇴계 이황의 점필재 김종직에 대한 평가의 晩年定論, 다시 말하면 점필재 김종직에 대한 퇴계 이황의 본의는 그가 1550년 경술년 50세와 1551년 신해년 51세에 처음 짓고 난 다음 만년까지 계속해서 개고했던 「閒居次趙士敬具景瑞金舜擧權景受諸人唱酬韻十四首」 제12수와 「和陶集飮酒二十首·其十六」 두 수의 시에 잘 드러나 있다.
“Jeompiljae Kim Jong-Jik was not one who studied neo-Confucianism but one who practiced literature." This is a widely known new perspective on Kim by Toegye Yi Hwang during his later years, which is just opposite to what he had in mind in his earlier years. Interpreted as Toegye's assessment of Kim Jong-Jik as a literary man, not as a scholar, his comment served as a critical justification for substantially diminishing Kim's presence in the history of neo-Confucianism that bloomed after the death of Toegye Yi Hwang during the Chosun Dynasty. However, an empirical study on related documents points otherwise. Yi Hwang's remarks were made in a specifically confined situation such as his disciples questioning him about Kim Jong-Jik whom they were inclined to underestimate. Simply put, parties standing against Kim Jong-Jik made their own interpretations of what Yi Hwang said, but these were not exactly the inner thoughts of Yi Hwang about Kim Jong-Jik. Contrary to the perception, Toegye Yi Hwang had deep respect for Jeompiljae Kim Jong-Jik throughout his life and appreciated him for being the big man behind the history of neo-Confucianism during the Chosun Dynasty. Related literatures also indicate how ardent he was about building a memorial hall for him in Milyang where Kim Jong-Jik resided most of his life.
