서커스는 아크로바틱, 광대극, 마술, 동물조련 등 기교적인 볼거리를 제공하는 오락이다. 현대의 서커스는 동물묘기로 대표되던 전통적인 방식 대신 연극적 요소를 강조하는 추세이며 최첨단의 기술과 결합하여 총체적인 예술로 나아가고 있다. 대표적인 사례가 캐나다의 태양서커스(Cirque du Soleil)로 예술적 측면과 함께 경제적인 부분에서도 많은 관심을 모으고 있다. 반면 우리나라 최초의 서커스단으로 유일하게 현존하고 있는 동춘서커스의 경우 사회적으로 낮은 인식으로 인해 대중들의 관심에서 멀어졌고, 학문적인 접근도 많이 이루어지지 않았다. 하지만 동춘서커스는 일제 강점기를 거쳐 21세기에 이르기까지 거의 90년에 가까운 역사를 가지고 오랜 동안 한국에서 유일하게 살아남은 서커스 단체로 한국 서커스사에서 중요한 위치를 차지하고 있다. 또한 동춘서커스의 초창기 공연의 양상인 마술과 신파극, 묘기, 쇼 등은 가무백희, 산악백희 등에서 행해졌던 연희의 모습을 엿볼 수 있어, 한국 전통연희사의 연구에도 필요하다. 아울러 동춘서커스에서 활동했던 여러 인물들이 이후 영화배우와 가수, 코미디언 등으로 진출한 것을 보면 그동안 우리나라에서 잘 다루지 않았던 대중 연예사의 하나로 또 다른 연구의 가치가 있음을 알 수 있다. 본고에서는 태양서커스의 성공 요인과 함께 우리나라 서커스의 진행 과정 그리고 국내 유일의 서커스단으로 활동하고 있는 동춘서커스의 세부 공연 구성을 다루면서 국내 서커스의 발전 방안을 모색하고자 한다.
Circus is a form of entertainment that provides artful attractions such as acrobatics, clown shows, magic shows, and animal shows. Modern circus now focuses on theatrical elements, instead of the traditional ways focused on animal acrobatics, and by combining advanced technology, circus is now becoming a form of general arts. The most representative example would be the Cirque du Soleil of Canada, which is gathering much attention on its artistic and economical aspects. On the other hand, in case of Dong Chun Circus, which is Korea’s first circus and still existing today, receives very low attention from the public and no scholarly approach has been taken. However, Dong Chun circus lived through Japanese colonial rule and has a long history of 90 years, and is the only surviving circus group in Korea, taking a very important position in the history of circus. Also, the magic shows, 'Sin-Pa' play(新派劇), acrobatics, and shows that composed early period performances of the circus group reflected the theatrical elements of Sanakbaekheui(散樂百戱), Gamubaekheui(歌舞百戱), hence is necessary in the research of history of Korean traditional theatre. Additionally, by looking at how many members from Dong Chun circus moved on to become movie actors, singers, or comedians, it can be assumed that the circus is a valuable resource in researching the history of pop culture of Korea. This research will seek to find a development plan of Korean circus by dealing with the success factors of Cirque du Soleil, progress of Korean circus, and detailed performance organization of Dong Chun circus.
