광암(曠菴) 이벽(李檗, 1754-1785)은 조선후기 유학자로서 명성이 높았으며,또한 한국 천주교 초기의 지도자였던 인물이다. 한국적 신학을 주창한다고 할 때유교와 기독교간의 비교연구라는 주제가 매우 중요하다고 보면, 이벽이 저술한 『성교요지』(聖敎要旨)는 조선후기에 유학자로서 기독교를 어떤 관점에서 이해하고 수용하게 되었는지를 보여주는 매우 독보적인 사상사적 자료이며, 한국 최초의 기독교 이해와 그 종교적 내면성까지 엿볼 수 있게 하는 귀중한 자료이다. 그래서 이 글에서는 이벽의 『성교요지』가 어떠한 작품인지를 그 구성과 주요 내용을 필자의 관점에서 분석하여 유교와 기독교간의 만남의 구체적인 내용을 살펴보고자 한다. 물론 이에 대해서 기존 천주교 학자들 중에 분석한 내용이 있으나그러한 분석은 주자학 자체에 대한 왜곡된 이해를 하고 있다는 점과, 『성교요지』를유교 경전과 연관하여 명확하게 그 구조를 파악하지 못하고 있는 한계를 가지고 있다. 그래서 필자는 이러한 내용을 비판하고 보완하기 위하여 이벽은 그의 『성교요지』를 통하여 당시 양반 계층에 있는 사람들에게 거부감을 최소화하면서 복음을 전하기 위하여 유교의 대표적인 경전인 『大學』과 『中庸』의 기본적인 구조와 내용을따르면서도 성경의 내용을 주체적으로 잘 소화하여 소개한 매우 독보적인 작품임을 본 글에서 심층적으로 밝혀 보고자 한다. 그러므로 필자는 본 논문을 통하여 이벽의 『성교요지』가 오늘날 유교-기독교간의 대화에 주는 신학적 통찰이 매우 귀중한 것임을 밝혀, 향후 본 연구 주제가 깊이 검토될 필요성이 있음을 제시하고자 한다.
This paper seeks to investigate to establish theologically sound and appropriate relationship between Confucianism and Christianity, focusing on Yi Byeok(李檗,1754-1785)’s 『Seonggyo-yoji』[Essential Teachings of the Sacred Doctrine]. Yi Byeok was declared to be the most knowledgable person on both the Confucian classics and Christianity, and his 『Seonggyo-yoji』 is a twenty-eight page poetic composition in which he expresses his faith and his biblical knowledge, quoted in 『Mancheon-yugo』[Memories of Mancheon]) which was written by Cheong Yak-yong(丁若鏞, 1762-1836) in the first quarter of the 19th century during his exile in dasan [Tea Mountain]). 『Seonggyo-yoji』 was written in Chinese for scholars, and Yi Byeok presented Christine teaching along the lines of the two classical Confucian texts, the Great Learning(大學, Da xue) and the Doctrine of the Mean(中庸, Zhong yong). Yi Byeok made a great effort to relate the teachings of Confucius - principles on which they had all had been brought up, intellectually and culturally - to everyday reality, and to give them new insights and interpretations from the perspective of Jesus Christ’s teachings. It is indeed remarkable how Korean Christians in the late 18th century were capable of discovering the important dimension of humans’ basic equality before God and the dignity of women and children in the gospel. In this paper, I will demonstrate the inner-connectedness between Confucian texts of the Great Learning(大學, Da xue) and the Doctrine of the Mean(中庸, Zhong yong) and 『Seonggyo-yoji』, the core values of Confucius’ teaching - particularly those regarding morality, filial piety and respect for others, and sincerity - had to be maintained but reinforced in the perspective of the Biblical teachings. There was a great deal of intellectual and literary exchange, both Confucian and Christian in Yi Byeok’s『Seonggyo-yoji』.
