영성지도는 목회적 돌봄의 중요한 한 사역이다. 신학자들과 목회자들 사이에서 영성지도에 대한 관심이 최근에 많이 늘었다. 신학교들, 영성훈련센터들,그리고 상담센터들 가운데에는 영성지도자를 양성하는 프로그램을 계발하고 시도하고 있는 곳들이 많아지고 있다. 현대적 영성지도는 전통적 영성지도와 연속성 및 불연속성이 있다. 현대 기독교인들은 과거의 기독교인들이 경험하지 못했던 글로벌화, 포스트모던주의, 그리고 심리학, 인류학, 사회학 등 사회과학의 발달 등으로 인해 자신의 영적 경험을 해석하는 관점도 변화되었으며, 피지도자를대하는 영성지도자의 태도 역시 변화된 부분이 많이 있다. 이 논문은 현대적 영성지도가 어떤 특징들이 있는지 그리고 현대적 영성지도에 대한 논의가 어떤 주제들을 중심으로 전개되고 있는지를 북미지역에서 출판된 책과 논문들을 중심으로 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 먼저, 영성지도에대한 개괄적인 소개를 위해 정의, 전통적 모델, 그리고 영성지도 방법 등을 다룬다. 영성지도란 한 성숙한 기독교인이 다른 기독교인의 영적 성숙을 도와주는 계약적 관계의 과정을 말한다. 현대적 영성지도에서 영성지도자는 과거와는 달리동등한 입장에서 비지시적인 태도로 경청하며 반응한다. 다음으로, 현대의 영성지도가 관심을 갖고 있는 이슈들을 다섯 가지 주제들즉 전통, 이야기, 심리학, 상황, 그리고 문화 등으로 나눠 관련된 자료들을 주제에 따라 분류하고 소개한다. 전통을 주제로 하는 자료들은 기독교의 각 교단별전통 안에 영성지도가 어떻게 실천되어 왔는지를 다룬다. 이야기를 주제로 하는자료들은 해석학과 이야기 치료 이론의 관점에서 영성지도를 본다. 심리학을 주제로 하는 자료들은 심리학적 실습과 영성지도가 어떻게 다른지 그리고 심리학적 통찰이 영성지도에 어떤 도움이 되는지를 다룬다. 상황을 주제로 하는 자료들은 영성지도가 어떤 다양한 상황들에 적용 될 수 있는지를 보여준다. 마지막으로 문화를 주제로 하는 자료들은 문화간 영성지도를 실천할 때 고려할 사항들을 제공한다.
Spiritual direction is one of the important practices of pastoral care. Recently spiritual directiongets interest among theologians and pastors. Some seminaries, retreat centers, and counselingcenters are developing and implementing the programs for training of spiritual directors. Contemporary spiritual direction has continuity and discontinuity with traditional spiritualdirection. Influenced by globalism, postmodernism, and social sciences (such as psychology,anthropology, and sociology) contemporary Christians have different viewpoints on their ownspiritual experiences and the attitudes of spiritual directors have been changed in many ways. This paper aims to explore characteristics of spiritual direction and present current issuesof spiritual direction by examining books and papers published in North America. First, itintroduces spiritual direction by stating its definition, its traditional models, and its methods. Christian spiritual direction is a process of the covenantal relationship between a matureChristian and another Christian who wants to experience spiritual growth. In contemporaryspiritual directors as companions listen and respond non-directively to the life stories or spiritualexperiences of directees. Then, this paper categorizes and explores the current issues of spiritual direction into fivetopics such as tradition, narrative, psychology, context and culture. The resources on traditiondeal with how spiritual direction has been practiced in many denominations. The resourceson narrative see spiritual direction in terms of hermeneutics and narrative therapy. The resourceson psychology show how psychological practices and spiritual direction differentiateand how helpful psychological insights are for spiritual direction. The resources on contextfocus on how spiritual direction can be adapted to various situations. Finally, the resources onculture provide some insights for cross-cultural spiritual direction.
