대중문화에 대한 한국교회 그리스도인들의 태도는 최근 많이 유연해졌다. 기독교 공동체 안에서도 다양한 문화 콘텐츠들이 생산되고 있고, 대중문화의 형식을 빌려 외부 세계와 소통하려고 노력하고 있다. 그런데 그러한 형식적 노력에 비해 대중문화에 대한 신학적 비평은 여전히 기독교 공동체 내부자들의 담론으로형성되고 있다. 본 논문은 최근 개봉된 기독교 소재를 다룬 허리우드 영화들에 대한 비판들이 대부분 기독교적 관점을 전달할 뿐 영화와 대화를 진지하게 전개하지 못하고 있다는 문제의식에서 출발한다. 공공신학은 시민사회와 대중문화의 영역에서 공감과 설득을 획득할 수 있는방식으로 기독교적 가치와 신학적 논리를 전개한다. 그래서 공공신학적 영화비평은 공적으로 형성되어 있는 영화 비평가 집단과 대화가 가능한 신학적 비평방식이필요하다는 전제를 가지고 있다. 이것은 영화의 사회적 특성과 종교적 특성을 의식하며 기독교적 가치를 문화를 통해 유통하고 전하려는 선교적 목적도 가진다. 본 논문의 연구는 주로 영미계통의 학자들을 중심으로 진행되었지만, 그 적용과 제안의 설정에 있어서는 국내 상황과 국내의 일반 영화비평가들의 견해도반영하여 연구하였다. 이러한 작업을 통해 기독교적 영화비평의 자리가 교회 밖의 공적 영역의 변화에 대해서도 민감하게 반응해야 한다는 점을 고려하려고 노력하였다. 이런 점에서 본 논문은 마쉬, 라이덴, 존스톤과 같은 영미 학자들의 논의와국내의 공공신학의 관점을 결합하여 영화를 통해 듣는 신적 메시지를 우리가 함께 살아가는 사회적 구성원들이 보편적으로 이해할 수 있는 방식으로 전달하려는신학적 방법론을 모색하고자 하는 것이다. 이를 통해 한국교회의 그리스도인들이영화를 통해 신과 대화하고 동시에 함께 살아가는 세상과 대화할 수 있는 문화적소통과 변혁의 장을 더 많이 확보할 수 있게 되기를 기대한다.
Cultural attitudes of the Korean Christian toward popular culture have become flexiblein recent times. The Christian community has been producing lots of rich and diverse culturalcontents, trying to communicate with the outside church. Yet the theological culturalcriticism has been still operated for inside christian community. So this study starts from theproblem of recognition that the theological film criticism of Korean Church is too muchinclined to the conservative viewpoint, not trying to discuss with film itself in social context. Public theology has been trying to develop the theological discourse to share and distributeChristian values and agendas in the civil society and popular culture. Public theologiansargue that Christians in a pluralistic society should be aware of the publicness of faitheven for their missional life. From this perspective, I propose that public theological filmcritique has to look for a way to work also in the public area of professional film critics. It ismissional task for Christian film critics to convey christian values in the public fields consideringthe social and religious characteristics of films. This paper wants to find out the manner through which to connect the public theologicalperspective with the film critics of scholars like Marsh, Lyden, and Johnston, and as wellas looking for a theological tries to look for method to convey the divine message of the filmto the ordinary people in our society. It suggests the way that christians in Korean Churchescould take part in the public fields more effectively via films to communicate with peopleand engage in cultural transformation of the world.
