인류는 끊임없이 과학과 기술면에서 혁신적인 발전을 이루었다. 그 덕택으로 인간은 과거에는 무지했던 분야에 있어서 많은 지식을 가지게 되었다. 그래서 인간은 신앙의 자유를 가질 수 있게 되었고, 자연 환경과 사회적 제약의 지배와 온갖 미신 형태의 지배로부터 벗어날 수가 있었다. 하지만 동시에 과학과 기술의 발전은 우리 삶의 많은 조건을 제약시키며 우리를 자연으로부터 멀어지게 하는 결과도 초래했다. 또한 인류 사회는 물질주의와 소비주의, 그리고 경제제일주의를 앞세워 전쟁과 경제적 폭력을 일삼는 등 인간 삶의 의미에 대해 더 이상 어떠한 답변을 줄 수 없을 지경이 되었다. 그래서 결과적으로 인간의 개인주의가 극대화되는 한편, 익명성과 집단성으로 자꾸만 빠져들어 가게 된 것이다. 이러한 상황에서 종교의 필요성에 대해서 무시하거나 아니면 이성주의의 논리로 종교의 필요성을 제거하려는 조류가 형성되기 시작했다. 그뿐만 아니라 적어도 새로운 형태의 종교, 즉 강력한 주관주의적인 경향과 무정부적이고 비체제적인 색채를 띤 종교를 원하는 경향이 생겨나게 되었다. 이와 같은 맥락에서 뉴 에이지라는 말이 등장하게 되었는데, 뉴 에이지라는 표현은 한마디로 전혀 다른 새로운 세상, 즉 개인 선의 추구가 중심축을 이루는 세상을 묘사한 것이다. 오늘날 우리는 신문, 잡지에서 개인적인 활기와 환경 적응을 위한 아주 다양한 제안들을 접하게 된다. 예컨대 신체 이완(혹은 여가 선용: relaxation), 묵상, 운세, 점성술, 텔레파시, 초능력, 중국 체조, 야채주의, 요가, 최면술, 환생설(윤회설), 원죄주의, 수상 스포츠 등 많은 정신 수양 및 건강 유지를 위한 이론들이 판을 치고 있다. 실로 이러한 많은 제안들이 요구하는 실행들은 사람들로 하여금 의식적이든 무의식적이든 뉴 에이지 안으로 깊숙이 들어가게 만든다. 넓은 의미에서 본다면, 뉴 에이지는 현대인들이 정신적인 스트레스에서 벗어날 수 있도록 하는 새로운 영감으로 여겨지고 있다. 이는 마치 오늘날 사상의 조류와 합일하는 듯이 보이기도 한다. 실로 19세기 이후에는 이성주의가 한계에 봉착하게 됨에 따라, 기술과 과학의 진보에 따른 많은 위험 요소가 대두되었다. 그와 동시에 인간과 세상에 대한 새로운 개념이 대두되었다. 이 새로운 관점은 고대의 의식이나 관습을 토대로 이루어졌다. 그래서 그 근본 사상은 인간 개체를 우주를 형성하는 모든 에너지 안에서 전체성을 이루는 존재로 여기는 점에서 시작된다. 무엇보다도 뉴 에이지는 하느님을 인격신으로 보지 않고 우주의 신적 에너지로만 보고, 그리스도도 우주적인 힘을 가진 에너지로 본다. 이러한 새로운 영성은 범신론과 종교 혼합주의를 깔고 있기에 우리 가톨릭 신앙의 교의에 정면으로 위배된다. 그들이 가진 하느님 사상은 모든 성서와 전통을 부인하고, 길이요 진리요 생명이신 예수 그리스도를 통한 구원론을 배척한다. 따라서 우리의 참된 신앙을 위해서 교회의 보다 구체적인 대책이 필요하다. 무엇보다도 우리가 뉴에이지 현상들을 올바로 인식하고 분명한 분별력을 갖출 때 가톨릭교회의 전통적인 영신수련과 기도 방법들(특히 동양적인 방법들)을 잘 활용할 수 있을 것이다. 그러나 우리 신앙의 골자(신앙의 내용, 신앙의 대상)를 먼저 알아야 한다. 무엇보다 이것이 확실한 분별 기준이 된다.

With materialism, consumerism and economism, the human race in the present situation like war and economic terror refuses to answer the meaning of our life. In the result, maximized individualism led us to the anonymity and collectivity. Under this circumstance a current to ignore the religion or eliminate the need of religion with the rationalism appears. And there is a growing tendency to need a totally new religion, that is, a very subjective, anarchistic and non-systematic religion. The term New Age arose from the situation. New Age means a totally different world which turns on the axis of the pursuit of individual good. Today in the newspaper and magazines we can see various suggestions for the personal vitality and adaptation to the surroundings. For example, theories for mind control, keeping fit like relaxation, meditation, fortunes, astrology, horoscopy, telepathy, China, acrobats, vegetarianism, yoga, hypnotism, reincarnation, original sin, aquatic sports are overflowing. In fact, the suggestions itself lead people to New Age whether they are conscious of it or not. In a wider respect, New Age is regarded as new inspiration for modern people to get rid of stress. This seems to be compatible with current thoughts. Since 1990s with the limit of rationalism, people can notice the danger following the scientific and technological development. At the same time, a new concept about human beings and the world was rising, which was based on ancient rites and customs. Therefore basic concept is that man is a holistic existence in the universe composed of all kinds of energy. Above all New Age doesn't regard God as a personal god but as a divine energy of universe, and regard Jesus Christ as a kind of energy with universal power. This new spirit based on the mixture of pantheism and religion is contrary to the Catholic dogma. They refuse all the gospels and catholic tradition. Furthermore, they don't accept the salvation by Jesus Christ, who is the way, the truth, and life. Therefore Church should take concrete and general actions for our truthful faith. With discretion and knowledge of New Age, we can use conventional Catholic spiritual training and ways of praying(especially eastern ways).
