‘마음이 가난한 사람들은 행복하다. 하늘나라가 그들의 것이다. ….’고 말씀하신 예수님의 가르침을 교부들은 어떻게 이해하고 설명했는지 살펴봄으로써, 참행복이 무엇인지 알아보자. 익명의 저자는, 마음이 가난한 사람이란 회개하여 어린아이처럼 겸손해진 사람이라고 말한다. 푸아티에의 힐라리우스는, 마음이 겸손한 사람만이 완전한 복됨을 누릴 수 있다고 말한다. 익명의 저자는, 자기 죄 때문에 슬퍼하는 이들은 이 세상에서 위로를 받지만, 다른 사람들의 죄 때문에 슬퍼하는 이들은 하늘 나라에서 위로를 받을 것이다. 크로마티우스는, 온유한 이는 온화하고 겸손하면서 복음 정신을 충실히 받아들인 사람으로서 주님의 온유함을 본받는다고 말한다. 익명의 저자는 의로움에 주리고 목말라 하는 사람은 오직 하느님의 의로움을 애타게 갈망하면서 실천하는 사람이라고 설명한다. 아우구스티누스는 우리가 왜 자비를 베풀어야 하는 지에 대해 구체적인 예를 들어 설명하면서, 우리는 하느님 앞에서 거지이므로 거지의 목소리를 들을 때면 우리 자신도 하느님 앞에서 거지임을 기억해야 한다고 강조한다. 하느님께서는 여러분이 거지를 대하는 대로 당신의 거지를 대하실 것입니다. 크로마티우스는 마음이 깨끗한 사람은 죄와 육신의 더러움을 모두 깨끗이 씻고 믿음과 의로움으로 하느님 마음에 든 사람이라고 설명한다. 그는 평화를 이루는 사람이란 불화와 불일치라는 걸림돌에서 멀찍이 떨어져 보편 신앙의 일치 아래 형제의 사랑과 교회의 평화를 지키는 사람들이라고 말한다. 알렉산드리아의 키릴루스는, 다른 사람들이 성경에서 불일치만을 찾아낼 때, 성경의 일치를 예증해 내는 이야말로 평화를 이루는 사람들이라고 설명한다. 요한 크리소스토무스는 주님 때문에 모욕당하고 박해 받아 복된 사람으로 인정받는 두 가지 조건을 제시한다. 첫째, 그리스도 때문에 모욕을 당해야 한다. 둘째, 모욕당하는 그 말이 거짓말이어야 한다. 참행복에 대한 교부들의 설명에는 주님께서 말씀하신 참다운 제자의 길과 참다운 그리스도인의 길이 암축되어 담겨있다. 참행복에 대한 교부들의 설명은 참다운 그리스도인의 삶이 어떤 것인지를 분명하게 제시해 줄뿐만 아니라 그리스도인답게 사는 구체적인 방법을 보여준다.

Let us know what the Beatitudes are, by considering how the Church Fathers understood and explained the teachings of Jesus; ‘Blesses are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven …’According to an anonymous writer, only the one who has repented and has become like a child is poor in spirit. Hilary of Poitiers said that those who are humble in spirit can enjoy the perfect Beatitudes. Those who mourn over their own sins shall be comforted in this world but those who mourn over the sins of others will be comforted in the world of God. Chromatius said that the meek, who are gentle, humble and imbue with the precepts of the gospel, imitate the meekness of the Lord. Whoever hungers for righteousness desires God’s own righteousness and wants to live actively according to it. Augustine, explaining with concrete examples of why we must hold mercy, insisted that we must remember the fact: we hear a voice of a beggar but before God, we are ourselves beggars. As we are beggars before God, we should treat beggars as we would be treated by Him. Chromatius explained that people with pure hearts are those who have gotten rid of sins’ filth; have cleansed themselves of all the pollutions of flesh; and have pleased God through works of faith and justice. He said that the peacemakers are those who, standing apart from the stumbling block of disagreement and discord, guard the affection of fraternal love and peace of the church under the unity of universal faith. The peacemakers demonstrate a harmony of the Scriptures whereas others only see a contradiction among the Scriptures. John Chrysostom presented two qualifications in order to recognize people whom are blessed through insults and oppressions because of the Lord. First of all, insults should happen for the Christ’s sake and secondly insults that have been said must be false. The Church Fathers’ commentary on the Beatitudes has its ways of true disciples in which the Lord has said and of true Christians. Their explanation not only presents what a true Christian life is but also gives concrete examples of how to live the true Christian life.
