본 논문의 목적은 병인박해 이후에 프랑스 선교잡지들이 조선 천주교회의 상황에 대해 어떤 가졌던 입장을 파악하려는 것이다. 당시 프랑스의 선교후원단체인 전교회(L'Œvre de la Propagation de la Foi)에서 발행한 두 잡지인 『전교회연보 Annale de la Propagation de la Foi』와 『가톨릭선교 Les Missions Catholiques』라는 잡지의 보도 기사를 분석하려고 한다. 1866년과 1874년 사이에 보도한 조선 교회 관련 기사는 『전교회연보』는 16건, 『가톨릭선교』는 24건이다. 이 보도 기사들은 선교사 서한 인용 기사, 도서 소개, 순교자 약력 소개, 언론 보도 인용 기사, 중점 보도 기사, 단신 기사의 유형으로 분류할 수 있다. 그리고 이 기사의 내용은 조선의 천주교 박해 상황과 프랑스 및 미국의 조선 원정, 리델 주교의 임명과 근황, 흥선대원군의 실정을 비롯한 조선 내부의 상황 등이다. 그런데 잘 살펴 보면 순교자들의 이야기가 적지 않은 비중을 차지하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 『가톨릭선교』에 나오는 순교자 전기 소개와 순교자 약력을 비롯하여 선교사들의 서한에 순교자들의 이야기가 적지 않게 나와 있다. 이 보도들의 논점은 크게 두 가지로 볼 수 있다. 첫째는 순교 영성 강조와 선교열의 고취이다. 순교자의 영웅성을 강조함으로써 순교 영성을 독자들에게 확실히 각인시켜 주고 있다. 이와 더불어 순교 영성과 기도생활 강조를 통해 선교열을 고취시키고자 한 의도가 있다. 둘째는 조선 정세에 대한 관심이다. 그런데 이러한 점들은 조선 정부와 흥선대원군에 대한 부정적인 인식과 더불어 조선의 천주교 신자들이나 일반 백성들에 대한 연민도 포함하고 있다. 선교잡지의 보도는 사실상 두 가지 면을 목표로 삼은 것으로 보인다. 우선 조선을 비롯한 아시아 지역에 대한 선교 열정을 높이고 전교회의 후원금 모금을 늘리고자 함이다. 그 다음으로 이를 읽은 독자들인 프랑스 신자들의 신앙심을 고취시키고자 하는 면도 있다.
The purpose of this study is to seize the essence of French mission magazines’ articles about the situation of Joseon Catholic Church after Byung-In persecution. Here, analyze the articles in 2 magazines; “Annale de la propagation de la Foi” and “Les Missions Catholiques” published by L’Oevre de la Propagation de la Foi, French mission support organization at that time. There were 16 articles in Annale de la Propagation de la Foi, 24 articles in Les Missions Catholiques regarding Joseon Catholic Church from 1866 to 1874. These articles could be classified to quotes from missionary letters, book reviews, martyrs’ personal records, quotes from media report, priority reports and short articles. The contents were about the state of Joseon Catholic Church persecution, the French and U.S.A. expedition, the appointment and situation of Bishop Rittel, maladministration of Heung-Sun Dae Won Gun and circumstances of Joseon government. With careful investigation, it is found that martyrs stories took severe portions. In Les Missions Catholiques, there were quite many stories about martyrs and their personal records in missionary letters. Missionaries wrote about martyrs even in their letters. The points at issue are two. One is the emphasis on martyrdom spirituality and its inspiration. With emphasizing martyrs’ heroic deeds, they could carve martyr’s spirituality to the readers. Another intention is to inspire missionary work also from emphasizing martyrdom spirituality and their life with prayers. The other is the interest on the circumstances of Joseon. These are including the negative understandings about Joseon government and Heung-Sun Dae Won Gun. Sympathy for Joseon Catholic Christians and ordinary people also included. It seems that the articles of those two magazines goaled two aspects. Firstly, to elevate missionary work enthusiasm in Asia including Joseon and to increase fund raising of L’Oevre de la Propagation de la Foi. Next is to inspire the faith of French Christian who read these articles.
