20세기 후반에 들어 다양한 해석적 도구들이 성서 연구에 도입되면서, 성경본문에 대한 기존의 해석에 대한 재고, 때로는 비틀어보기까지도 시도되고 있다. 엘리야에 관한 해석에서도 이러한 움직임을 볼 수 있다. 엘리야는 일부 학자들의 해석을 통해 독선적이고 일관성이 결여된 인물로 재구성되기도 한다. 이러한 시도 자체는 인식의 지평을 확장하고, 학문적 정직성을 도모한다는데 의의를 둘 수도 있지만, 성경 본문의 문맥에서 너무 멀리 벗어난 해석에서는 득보다는 실이 더 크며, 심할 경우 내용의 왜곡을 초래할 수도 있다. 이에 문제의식을 느낀 차일즈는 적절한 분별력으로 문학적 비평 도구를 사용할 것을 권고하고 있다. 이에 공감하며, 본고에서는 엘리야에 관한 부정적 견해들을 수정하는 동시, 1열왕 17장에서 2열왕 2장 사이에 흩어져 있는 엘리야 사화를 연결된 맥락에서 읽기를 시도한다. 1열왕 17-19, 1열왕 21, 그리고 2열왕 1-2에 걸쳐 세 부분으로 전해지는 엘리야 사화는 개별적으로도 저마다의 의미를 지니지만, 이러한 개별적 일화들이 연결되면서 한편으로는 의미의 축적이 일어나고, 또 다른 한편으로는 작가의 의도를 엿볼 수 있게 하는 구조를 이루어가고 있음을 간과해서는 안 된다. 필자는 엘리야를 특별한 공경의 대상으로 부각시키는 문학적 장치들이 전체 엘리야 사화에 걸쳐 작용하고 있음을 발견하였다. 엘리야 사화의 작가는 (1) 통과 의례, (2) 점층적인 이미지의 축적, 그리고 (3) 교차대구적 구조를 통하여 엘리야를 불멸의 존재로 그려내고 있다.
Since the introduction of various interpretative tools into the field of biblical studies during the latter half of the twentieth century, attempts have been made to revisit or twist the held understanding of the biblical texts. The case of the Elijah narrative is no exception. A group of scholars reconstructed Elijah as a person of self-righteous and inconsistent character which is far from the venerable prophet of God. These attempts in themselves are meaningful in that they extend the horizon of literary appreciation and promote academic honesty. However, the interpretations that deviated too much from the main context do more harm than good: distortion of the biblical content. Regarding this problem, Childs emphasizes the importance of discretion in utilizing newly-introduced literary tools. In line with Childs, this study tries to correct the distorted image of Elijah on the one hand, and read the Elijah narrative as a whole on the other hand. Elijah cycle is preserved scattered into 1King 17 - 2King 2. Each episode has meaning in itself. At the same time, these episodes construct cumulative meaning as the narrative develops, and build a structure that reflects the author's intention for the Elijah narrative. Reading the narrative as a whole leads to a find that there are three literary devices that works throughout the whole narrative. The author of the Elijah narrative develops the figure of Elijah as the immortal prophet of God through (1) the passage of rite, (2) cumulative images, and (3) a chiastic structure.
