일본 대학의 구조개혁을 위해서는 무엇보다 먼저 자족적인 학문체제를 벗어나, 자신의 학적 위치를 대상화하려는 노력이 필요하다. 국문학 연구자는 이 '국문학'이란 장르가 '나라' '문학'의 개념과 연관을 가지면서 구성되어 왔다는 사실을 자각해야 한다. '일본문학'의 유산을 가장 효과적인 운용하고 창조성을 발휘하는 길은, 종래의 '국문학' 개념을 뛰어넘는 새로운 '대화능력(literacy)'의 창출에 있다. '일본', '나라', '문학'으로 규정된 것의 역사적·사회적·이데올로기적인 구조를 밝혀야 하고, 눈앞에 보이는 경제효능과 사회적 '효능'에 구애받지 않으면서, 활달한 '배움'을 전개해야 한다. 이것이 현재의 위기에 가장 능동적으로 대항하는 길이다. 이러한 방법으로써 자문화(自子文化)의 자기대상화, 이문화(異文化)와의 상호이해를 지향하는 국제적인 '대화능력'이 획득될 것이다.
