In this paper, I studied Ip-yeon-gi(入燕記) by Shin Seok-u(申錫愚) who had been to Beijing as the chief envoy of the winter solstice in 1860. Ip-yeon-gi can be regarded as a typical account of travel in Beijing of the 19th century, but a full-scale study of it has not made until now. Shin Seok-u(1805-1865) can be regarded as a successor of Buk-hak(北學) like Hong Yang-hu and Park Gyu-su. He had been influenced strongly by Park Ji-won's Buk-hak from his youth, and Beijing travel of his uncle, Shin Jae-sik and Hong Yang-hu in 1826 made him dream of his travel in Beijing. Shin Seok-u, who had started for China in December 1860, immediately after the Beijing Incident, minutely observed and reported conditions of China invaded by the West, during his stay in Beijing. In addition he made an effort in Korean-Chinese literary exchange, keeping company with Chinese men like Cheng Gong-shou, Shen Bing-cheng, Dong Wen-huan, and so on. Shin Seok-u’s Ip-yeon-gi is a full account of travel in Beijing containing his observation and experience of those days. Ip-yeon-gi succeeded Park Ji-won's Yeolha-ilgi as an account of travel in Beijing. It testifies the tradition of Buk-hak continued in the 19th century.
