The 18th century in Korea was a period that witnessed a dynamic increase in the rise of literary movements as well as poetry societies, in both number and variety. The purpose of this paper is to shed light on the background of this phenomenon by closely examining a number of poetry societies active during the period, as they are, as a whole, a good indicator of the diversity and dynamism of the 18th century Joseon literary world. Members in a poetry society shared certain common denominators, such as political affiliation, social status, and locale and age. While a poetry society engaged its members in the creative activities of writing poems, it also served as a platform for many other activities, such as political association, reading seminars, seasonal excursions, outdoor picnics, and social gatherings marking various rites of passage. Geographically, poetry societies were active in the Seoul area as well as in the provinces. In terms of membership, the societies were formed not only among the sadaebu, the scholar-officials, or the men of the upper classes, but also among the jungin, the privileged commoners. This paper examines the activities of a number of poetry societies that represent different aspects of a poetry society. First, the paper focuses on the creative aspect of poetry societies that were aligned with certain political factions, such as the Southern (Namin) and Smaller Northern (Sobuk) factions. Second the paper examines the activities of poetry societies with a strong political platform; they include poetry societies aligned with Old Learning (Noron) and Southern (Namin) factions, two strong rival factions of the time. Third, the paper examines the social and entertainment aspects of a poetry society; in this category the paper examines the Bamboo and Orchid Poetry Society led by Jeong Yak-yong and poetry societies formed by jungin. The research and analysis of data in this paper show that the 18th century was a time when poetry societies were formed in large numbers and that a great diversity of literary groups existed.
