이 글은 현재 소설사 편년 추정의 중요한 근거로 활용되고 있는 서울대본 <옥원재합기연> 소재 소설목록의 작성 시기와 성격에 대해 고찰한 결과이다. 많은 선행연구가 <옥원재합기연>의 소설목록을 18세기 후반의 자료로 판단하고 있다. 그러나 여러 가지 정황을 종합해 보면, 이 소설목록이 작성된 시기는 1847년 이후의 어느 시점일 가능성이 매우 높다. <옥원재합기연> 권14와 권15는 1847년 해평윤씨에 의해 개장되었는데, 소설목록이 적힌 종이의 지질이나 충해 흔적 등 물리적 형태는 개장된 앞표지의 面紙와 매우 가깝기 때문이다. 따라서 소설목록이 적힌 종이는 원래 앞표지의 면지를 이루고 있던 여러 겹의 종이 중 가장 겉에 있었던 종이가 떨어져 나와서 생겼으며, 문제의 소설목록은 이렇게 떨어져 나온 종이를 발견한 누군가에 의해 기록되었다는 것이 본고의 판단이다. <옥원재합기연>의 소설목록은 한글장편소설 위주이며, 책의 서명을 3단으로 나누어 질서정연하게 기록했다. 이는 <언문책목록>이나 <책열명록>과 유사한 방식이다. <언문책목록>과 <책열명록>의 작성 경위, 소설목록에 실린 작품들과 <옥원재합기연>의 관련성을 감안하면, 이 소설목록은 <옥원재합기연>의 독자들이 추가적으로 관심을 가질 만한 도서목록으로서 작성되었을 가능성이 있다. <옥원재합기연> 소설목록이 18세기 말에 작성되었다는 가정 하에 수행된 선행연구의 창작시기 추정은 재검토되어야 한다.
This article is the result of a review about the lists of novel books in Okwonjaehapgiyeon. A large number of studies have determined that the lists in Okwonjaehapgiyeon were written in the late 18th century. However, after examining various facts, the lists must have been written at any time after 1847. The book covers of vol.14 & 15 of Okwonjaehapgiyeon were changed in 1847 by Haepyeongyunsi. Quality and physical form of the paper of the lists is extremely similar to the paper attached to the inside front cover. Therefore, the paper of the lists must be the paper of the outermost of several layers of paper attached to the inside front cover. The lists probably were written by someone who found extra empty sheets of paper. The lists in Okwonjaehapgiyeon consist of mostly novels written in Hangul. And the titles are posted according to three horizontal lines. This is similar way to the Unmunchaekmokrok and Chaekyulmyeongrok. Given the reasons wrote Unmunchaekmokrok, Chaekyulmyeongrok, and the relevance of the lists and Okwonjaehapgiyeon, the lists probably were created as the list of books that might be of interest to readers of Okwonjaehapgiyeon. The research carried out under the assumption that the lists were written in the late 18th century are to be reviewed.
